I'm a soldier stationed in Germany and my 2002 explorer sport trac 5 speed manual transmission went out at 50000 miles. I ordered a transmission from the states because they are approx $5000 on the German economy. The problem is I received and M5R1 and the ford dealership refused to install because it does not have a speed sensor on the output shaft. I'm in the process of ordering another one and I can get an M5r1 with speed sensor but the German ford dealership says I need an M5r4. Can anyone clarify exactly what I need. I dont want to pay the outrageous german price but I also dont want to get stuck with another transmission I cant use. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

In 2001, Ford introduced a beefed up version of the M5OD-R1 for use behind the 4.0L SOHC in Rangers and Tracs. This upgraded transmission is the M5OD-R1HD. The M5OD-R1HD bolts to a 4.0L SOHC and has the Output Shaft Speed sensor in the tailhousing for the VSS. Just be sure to get the correct version - 2WD and 4WD are different.

It appears that the same transmission may also go by the designation of M5OD-R4, possibly in later years.
