2002 Mercury Mountaineer
Hi guys i have a 2002 mercury mountaineer with 104,000 miles on it with the original transmission. Anyway it is starting to slip from the 2-3 shift and the 4-5 shift. (I can drive like 3 miles with it stuck between 4th and 5th and then let off the gas and it shifts) is this the solnoid pack? Also any idea how to identify which transmission i have in my car. By the way it is AWD with 4.6.

I believe All 2002 Gen3 explorers/mountaineers had the 5r55w transmission (except the Sportrac)

Welcome to the Board.

You will want to check your fluid level and color/smell to see if it is low or burnt. at 104,000 miles it should have had a few fluid changes. I'm guessing since this is your first post the tranny has never been touched.

yeah it has never been apart or had fluid changed to my knowledge.

Here are some codes to ID the transmission from the ID sticker on the driver’s side door area.
I had a 03 xls and now have a 05 Mountaineer and both had the v coded 5R55(s) transmissions.
Both were high miles and both worked real good after the Ford dealer transmission flush and fill with Mercron 5

Had this happen to my 2002 mountianeer (5r55w) this summer. The tranny was shot, 3rd gear band was busted. Ford wanted like $3500 for a new one! Got a reman on ebay for $1300 works fine. Does the od light flash? mine did...
