Yesterday I replaced the belt on my engine (SOHC) and the transfer case shift motor and speed sensors.( My 4wd low didn't work before) When I took it out for a drive I noticed a high pitched whinning noise. Only made the noise if you were moving. The faster you go , the louder it got. My X has never made this noise before. Checked the new belt and everything was fine. The new shift motor shifts great. (Got my 4wd low back !). Everything I did seems to look like it should. I also checked to make sure I didn't leave any sensors unplugged. Can anyone help with this ?

I searched around on this site. Seems like it could be the belt tensioner that is whinning. Does that sound right ?

Belt noises are related to engine revs, not vehicle speed. You should get the whine revving the engine in the driveway if its the belt. If you have to move the truck to get the noise, think drivetrain.

You did check the fluid level in the transfer case? You're sure you are not in 4Whi on dry pavement?

I'm sure I'm not in 4wd. I have to turn pretty tight to get out of my driveway. I could tell if it was in 4wd. I haven't checked the fluid level. I will today. Why would it not whine until I worked on it ? All I did was replace the old shift motor and speed sensors.

Why did you replace the sensors? Were you having other 4wd problems besides the no low problem?

While you are at it, I would check both the front hubs and make sure they are disengaging like they should - kind of sounds like you have not used 4 wheel for awhile.

If the hubs are disengaging then I would think it's the transfer case doing the whine.

I took the shift motor off of a donar X.(worked great in donar) The speed sensors use the same wiring harness as the shift motor , so I just took them too. How can I tell if the hubs are locked or not ? I use my 4x4 everytime I go fishing. Hard pond to get too. I just never had 4X4 LOW. I do now. Maybe it has been low on fluid but never hurt anything until I engaged the LOW range. Maybe the planetary gears moving around (low on fluid) made it start whinning ?
