1995 Ford exployer
Hi everyone, hope you can help. My 1995 Ford Exployer was placed in 4WD Low by accident. It wasn't driven far only in driveway by my wife smashing down snow. Next day It wouldn't go into reverse only a whirring sound. It would engage in drive OK. Indicator lights would only show 4WD no 2WD and no 4WD Low. Today I was able to get into 4WD Low and I had Reverse. I drove it around block slowly and returned to driveway. Took it out of 4WD Low and lost reverse again and whirring sound began. Heard a thump when it went into 4WD Low, didn't hear anything when it should have entered 4WD. One more thing 4WD and 4WD low indicator lights flashed 3 times.

It sounds like your shift motor is not working properly, or the shift fork inside the T-case has a broken nylon end not allowing it to slide into place correctly.

You can remove the shift motor easily, to test it, and to see where the pin is pointing to. There are How-to threads on this matter in the transmission sub forum.
