Whistling Dixie

My explorer whistles at certain throttle positions. I can only guess that it is some sort of vaccuum leak, but not sure where to look under the hood. Any one have this problem, and know how to fix it?

I presume you have a 4.0L OHV? Check your vacuum line that comes off the throttle body on the bottom... mine whistles there from time to time, I need to replace that section come to think of it... Take care

Is it a vacuum hose on the drivers side of the TB? Am I looking for a crack, or what? It runs fine, but annoying, and I am guessing...probably robbing me of some HP?

The vacuum hose is on the bottom of the throttle body... just look to see if anything coming from that line is cracked, loose, etc.... mine was just loose, so I threw on some RTV let it set and it was fine.

squeaky belt or squeaky idler bearing....

A sqeaky belt or idler bearing make very distinct and very different noises. Both belt slip, and a bearing going out are very easy to diagnose. This is a whistling, and only happens at specific throttle positions. It sounds like it is directly behind the instrument cluster.

Like I said... check the vacuum line on the throttle body... I know the sound you are talking about

I put my money on the IAC.
Do a search for details. Tis quite a common problem. If allowed to go for a bit it'll start sounding like a foghorn

Monkeydude, I am going to check like you suggested. I just wanted to make it clear that I did not accept that other answer. All three of these things make very different sounds.

No problemo... I just had a whistle and the same type of conditions. right now I'm battling a high idle problem.... I'm thinking it's my TPS or something in that neighborhood, sometimes it idles at 700 perfectly and then sometimes it idles at 950... the 950 is what pisses me off because it sounds like shiat!!! Too much crap to go wrong... I love my buddy's 1972 Chevy nova.... if it runs bad, adjust the carb... LMAO

Monkeydude. If you know you have had a vacuum leak before on your TB, why wouldn't you make sure that is fixed before you do more troubleshooting for incorrect idle? Vacuum leaks cause improper idle.
