Sorry, but to get back to the orignial question.....I gutted both of mine on my 97. I wish that i wouldn't have. I gutted them, and let the stock muffler on for a while and it sounded a lot different and i could notice a loss on low end. Then put a flowmaster on, man it sounds great, but i could really tell a loss then. But it still runs good, the 5 speed helped with the power, but i still would like to have the low end back, so i'm looking for some new cats, but i'm not paying $611 from ford, anyone know where to get some new ones? Thanks

Happy trailes!

Maybe the question here should be:

Who here doesn't have a cat?

i have two cats and 3 dogs....:mattmoon:

well the back 2 cats on my truck are gone.. soon the pre-cats will be too... if you noticed a low end loss do something to make it back up ... you have to GIVE to GET.. NOTHING is free when making horsepower.. if the loss it to big .. then gear up !!!!! i really dont see this as being a problem w/ the v-8 explorers.mine snaps like a bat out of hell off the line ever since the hypertech power programer... maybe the v-6's yah....

do you have mil eliminators for the rear o2 sensors, or how do you avoid cel coming on?

no, you need those after you take off the FRONT cats..i have them already but i have just not had time to take the cats off..also going to do a 170 thermostat at the same time.. thinking about 4.10s front and rear if i can get a ford tech to re-program the computer for the different gears... oh yah , i just bought a NOS kit for it and if i have time over my christmus break i'll hook that up too.. HEHEHEH

i thought my 96 had o2 sensor after the rear cats. did your truck have them? where are they now. did you just remove them? are the mounted now just in a straight pipe? i'm interested in doing this, but we couldn't figure out what affect removing them would have on my cel and the way it ran. please describe just how you did it.

well it was easy on my 97.. all i had to do was unbolt the back 2 cats at the flange.. then i made some new flanges(UGLY) so i didnt have to cut up the stocks pipes w/ cats .. this way i can throw them back on w/o any problems if i need to ... i have 02's before the front cats and after the front cats.. nothing at the rear of the back cats so its not a problem at this point.. now i dont know if your 96 is different...

I still have the original cat on my 1991 Explorer XLT with some 150,000 miles (also original O2 sensor) - and apparently it is still working OK. It is my guess that if the cat does not get a large slug of gasoline vapors which would then burn (oxidize) in the cat, overheating it, and cooking the cat it will last. Also, high-centering or somehow having a rock hit the cat will break the ceramic honeycomb "innerds". If and when I have to replace the OEM cat, I want to put on a high-flow unit - and I was surprised with some costs for a cat for an Explorer mentioned on another thread. It was my impression that an ordinary replacement cat would cost about $100 (and I realize the 1991 model only had one cat so the cost is probably a lot less than for later Explorers with many cats).
