why do my brake lights stay on?

 Read up a few posts.

There is something wrong with the look up or something. The only reason I say that is because I had to replace the switch in my 02 Explorer not long ago. Rock Auto, AZ, Advance were all telling me the switch was $100 something, but the picture looked nothing like mine. I did some searching, found the switch from an 02 Windstar that matched mine, and it was like $12. Works fine.

Check this thread out also. It sounds like your switch matches the one I pulled out of my 02.

Thanx. I will check my local parts stores and see if the for a Windstar will work with mine.

Before you buy a new brake light switch, take the current one out of the truck, and look at the two pins on the switch that the wire harness connect to. Mine behaved just like yours, and I noticed I could fix the problem by wiggling the harness connection on the switch. Seems there is some play in the connection, and upon inspection, the two prongs in the switch were corroded, so there was just a very precise spot on those prongs where the harness plug would actually make the connection. I used a small straight-blade screwdriver to scrape the corrosion off the pins on the switch, reassembled, and now, if I wiggle the harness connection back and forth, it makes constant contact, and I have no more brake light issues.

The switch comes out easily. Use a pair of needle-nose pliars to remove the cotter pin, and pull the thing out. Pay attention to the round black plastic bushing in the switch, so you get in reinstalled properly. 10 minute fix, and it'll save you from buying a new brake light switch.

Good luck,

Greg
