My 1998 V6 SOHC explorer bogs out on hot or humid days. Mostly humid I would say, as I have had problems with it in 70 degree weather. I first noticed this problem when I swiss cheesed the air intake. I did this over the summer and it seemed to bog on humid or hot summer days. Ran good with none of these problems before I did this.

My bad is that I used to oil the K&N Filter from both sides with lots of oil. I am thinking the extra air flow might have dislogged oil on the top of the filter and splatted it on the MAF sensors. I did notice the MAF sensors where black with something. I sprayed and sprayed the sensors with Radio Shack electronics cleaner and let it dry. Seemed to make things a bit better, but still not great. I would say on muggy humid days that the gas milage is about 10 mpg or less when under throttle because of the bog. Yes, its that bad.

My questions is if the MAF Sensors are in bad shape would they cause this type of problem? The truck runs real strong in the cool dry weather giving it two personalities. I am not getting a check engine light either. If the MAF Sensors are dirty and the radio shack stuff will not get the oil off- what are my options?

Thanks and sorry for the long thread.

p.s. anyone messing around with and aftermarket air cleaner should read the instructions thorughly and not oil the thing from the inner side. If the filer is round this won't be a problem but mine was flat.

MAF Sensors are like this: they generate a heat range and to whatever voltage it needs to keep it in that range is what is sent back to the PCM. Now, that oil is basically baked on there. I would doubt at all that the MAFS is messed up and you only have one. I would suggest replacing it. You can replace it with a new one or even a good used one, but air filter oil has clammed a lot of MAFS. It would be nice to have a scan tool that will display information (such as MAFS voltage, and Ambient Temp), so you could see what the computer sees and is sending. Now, Ambient Temp is also important in this case if the MAF sensor does not correct your problem. Hope it all works out.

All the fingers seem to be pointing at the MAF sensors. The color of the sensors is not silver it is black. I did put excess oil on the top of the air filter. The car runs a lot worse in warm weather.

I guess I will give it a shot

The bogging problem seems to be worsening. Midrange power is dropping off a bit and gas milage is terrible. I just can't figure out what the problem is. What would cause an engine to bog under half throttle acceleration?

My ignition components are new and no check engine light is on. Its driving me crazy because my gas milage stinks and vehicle performance is fading. The thing is it bogs most of the time and other times it runs great- very puzzling.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
