Why does my odometer quit??

So my odometer quits working every once in a while. It always seems to happen when the miles turn over to a the next set of 10. For example. I have 184389 miles and Im turning over to 184390. It just quits half way through the turn. It normally gets stuck for about 10-30 miles but then starts back up for the next few hundred. Well the other day it quit and Ive gone over 300 miles. My trip meter also stops working when this happens. I would like to keep it as accurate as possible, so does anyone have any suggestions?

By the way, I drive a 95 ranger xlt. All stock.
