So again, I'm in the process of buying a Ford Explorer 17-19 with the Sport Appearance package. I've been looking at cargurus and Edmunds and it appears there are TONS of 17 models for sale with 25-35k more or less. Is there any reasons/ issues with this specific year model besides exhaust recall and rear control arm breaking? Or is it just due to leases being up and getting back to the dealerships?

Many of the 17-19 models are probably coming off leases. Have you noticed the number of Explorers for sale with around 100k miles on them? It is because people get rid of them when the warranty is running out. A lot of repairs for these vehicles can be very expensive like water pump replacement (hella expensive if the water pump takes out the engine), PTU replacement, transmission control module etc. Our 2015 Edge had the transmission control module go at 65k miles and it was a $2,500-$3,000 repair. Thankfully it we had a warranty. It looks like the water pump might be going too. We will likely be dumping it just before the warranty expires.

I see I was in the right track. Fortunately for me I'm a tech and have done numerous water pumps on MKTs with 3.7s and a couple of Explorers. Not too bad. So the front PTUs are a problem with 5th gen Explorers?

My 2017 Platinum was on the market as the dealer made me an offer on a 2020 Aviator that I took. The 2017 was on a 48 month lease but I only had it for 36 months. Sold in 2 months last Winter with 7500 miles on it.

Averaging 83 miles a week Peter since Mid March. My 2011 will be a pile of rust at this rate by the time I get to 160k :)

My Aviator, which I picked up on Halloween, is just under 1750 miles. ;)

My wife and I just bought a 2017 XLT, Sport appearance, White, 4x4, and all options offered on the XLT including middle row captain's chairs. It was also a lease before. I am so glad folks continue to lease or buy new ones so I can come in and steal it slightly used. :) So far we are really pleased with it. Love the look of the appearance package and the vehicle is proving to be a great travel vehicle.
