Widest tires with 17 inch rims

Does anyone know how wide of a tire I can put on my 93 Sport? I am getting 17in rims soon and I don't like the fact that these tires are so skinny and I think a little wider would look nicer and keep me on the ground a little better. I dont want the tire to stick out of the wheel well and I don't want it to rub. Thanks in advance.

well, i just got my new 17x9 cobra r rims from UPS and my 285 60 R17 pirelli tires and my 1" wheel spacers. 285's are pretty wide. i guess it depends on the offset you have on your rims. if i dont use the wheel spacers, ill get 'rubbage' on the sway bar - if i use them, ill get rubbage on the bumper, but im going to cut a small square (so small you wont even notice it) out of the bumper to remedy this, but then again, i have a 98 and you have a 93, i dont know if itll be different. hope this helps.

If you get the 17's with the same back spacing as stock, they will not stick out.

Thats what I am going to do but I want a wider tire then it is now (factory size). I think they are 235/75R15 and can I fit 235/85R17?

the 235 is the same width as the 17" 235...for more width go with a 285 60 17
