Ok so i blew the tranny in my 97 Explorer, Grenaded the rear tail shaft cause i didnt extend my driveshaft pretty much. So i call the junk yard and get another tranny for a 1997 ford Explorer 4.0l OHV 2wd. I get the transmission all bolts up and everything, and while connecting all the harnesses, i notice this tranny doesnt have a sensor my old one did. Was there a mid year change on sensors on the trannys or anything? From what i can find on the internet this sensor i have that the new tranny doesnt have is a ISS sensor. Looks like this:

Heres a thread i found bout this sensor and a new tranny and everything.

I cant figure out what is up though, i know with out the PCM reading this sensor its not running right though, OD light flashing, and not shifting till almost 5k for 1-2, and like 4.5k 2-3... Any of the tranny gurus if you could help me.

If yall need any more info please let me know, i dont have any real pictures of what im talking bout because my old tranny, new tranny, and truck is all at school sitting in the shop waiting for me to start working on it again monday.

In my other thread on the ISS sensor, it explained that this part was added on 2001, and newer vehicles. I don't know how your 97 could have it. I would suggest that you contact the place where you bought the transmission, and explain that it is not the correct one for your model.

Beginning with the start of production for 2001, Ford Motor Co. introduced a new-model transmission with the designation 5R44E, a five-speed transmission that replaces the previous-design 4R44E. This new 5R44E model, like the 5R55E transmission, has an added intermediate-shaft-speed (ISS) sensor.

The way i read it is; that in 2001 a new trans, the 5r44e was realeased(to replace the 4r44e), it features a ISS just like the 5r55e had.

Am i not reading this right?

also bump for anyone else that can help, thanks for the reply though...

Shouldn't the trannies have been 4r55es' and 5r55e's. I thought the new styles were 5r55w's but that may be entirely incorrect. I'd give the place you bought the trans a call, as suggested above.

Im getting fed up with this "salvage" yard. It took me 5 phone calls and all day to finally get ahold of the guy, than he trys telling me i dont have a 97, than he tells me well hes waiting to hear back from his transmission buddy, to see what the deal is. so now i just have my truck sitting at school on a lift, with no tranny, in it, and none to go in it....

Thanks for posting the link to that other thread about the fix. I wonder if there is a TSB about it?

i dont know, we have a software at school, that contains all TSBs, and the instructions for doing damn near anything on any kind of vehicle, (like a big haynes/chiltons software, just a hell of alot better, i think its called Mitchells, or something, im going to check the TSBs on that today...
