A friend of mine just bought a 99 XLT. It has power locks and a factory alarm. At least I think it has a factory alarm because the Thieft Light comes on when he locks it. It does not have the keyless entry. Does anyone know if a remote for locking and unlocking the doors will work on this Explorer.

I have seen the remotes on ebay for $10 dollars and I know differnt years use differnt remotes. I also know about programing remotes(cycle the key on and off 8 times and then press a button on the remote) but I do not know how to tell if his Explorer is remote compatable.

When you cycle the ignition those 8 times.. if the door locks cycle too (on the 8th cycle).. then he has remote keyless. If they don't hes out of luck.

EDIT: As far as the remote goes he'd need one from a 98+ Ford vehicle.

look in the jack compartment...and you will find a box with alot of wires coming out of it...if you see it, then you have keyless entry...if not you can put one in...find one at a junkyard but you have to run your own wires for it...i did this...and it works...
i think if you have the factory keyless entry you should have the keypad...and if you dont have the keypad then you dont have the keyless entry...

and about the theft light...if it blinks once every 30 seconds then you dont have keyless entry...if it blinks every 2-3 seconds then you do have it...
the blinking light is the anti-theft...pretend alarm...mostly all X's will have this if you do not have keyless entry...
