I've got a 97 Explorer XLT 5.0 v-8 with 51,000 miles on it. I hate the transmission in this thing. It seems like it's always shifting gears. It drops into over drive at 35mph which brings the rpm's down to a little over 1000. Then it has no power and it will down shift anytime you go up any type of hill. Somtimes it won't down shift even if the rpms get right at 1000, then you have to give it a bunch of gas and it will down shift and take off. It works great when I'm on the highway, or anyspeed over 50mph. Will an aftermarket chip keep the tranny from going into overdrive at such low speeds? Is there anything I can adjust that will keep it out of overdrive untill around 50mph? Thanks for the help.

around town, I turn off the overdrive by pressing the button on the shifter. It makes driving much better. No more lugging around in O/D at 40 mph.Once I am driving at speeds of 50 or higher, I just press the button again to reengage O/D.

secondly, The best way to make the tranny shift better (and last longer) is to put a shift kit in the tranny. I just purchased and installed the Baumann engineering Re-Cal Pro kit. check out:

It cost me $100, and another $150 to have it installed. The instructions were very thorough and written with the novice in-mind. I set mine up for level "4" shifting with Torque-compensation level "B". On a stock 5.0, I proably wouldn't set the level that high, but I run nitrous in my explorer.

It still shifts smoothly at part throttle, but at WOT, it shifts the gears fast and with authority. I am very pleased.

it is good stuff,

Andrew
