You might want to buy a leather wheel wrap(15-20 bucks). Mine was same way, and it was leaking this black ink crap on my hands when it got real hot. I got a leather wrap(slips on) good as new and looks great! Hope that helps.

When my steering wheel was getting a little thin, I just got a vinyl steering wheel cover from Autozone. $5 and the grey matches my interior perfectly. The only problem was that my truck smelled like vinyl for a few weeks.
Wheelskins are great real leather replacement wraps that you can put on. I paid about $35.00 for mine and it took me at least 45 minutes to sew it on. If you do go this route make sure to wear a glove on the hand that you use to pull the thread, I had a nasty deep cut in my joint when I was done.
Also, Easton baseball bat grip tape (the leather kind) makes a great replacement pad underneath the wheel skin. You'll need something there to make up for the old padding that is crappy and comes off with the original skin.
Pretty easy, probably an hour and a half or so to install plus ten minutes to take off the old skin. I would also recommend removing the center cover on the steering wheel. It makes it much easier to tie the thread around the "arms" that connect the "wheel" part to the "center" part.
