I've found a used '95 4.0 for a reasonable price (it's got 27K on it) to replace my aging '93 with 180K on it. Is this a drop in solution or will I end up replacing everything to do it? I believe I have the A4LD tranny. Any Help would be much appreciated.

The reason I'm thinking of doing this Is that I've got a constant knocking coming from the engine that becomes worse as I'm accelerating or climbing, that and my original has 180K on it. I'm looking for any thoughts or opinions as to what to do. I'm only burning about a qt of oil between oil changes and I've been using the Quaker Qtate high mileage oil. I'm tired of hearing the "it's spark noise" from the mechanic. Should I worry or just ignore it and wait until it goes?

Sounds Like what u have is a leak in your lower intake manifold gasket. I had the same problem around 70,000 miles detonation, knock 1 qt. oil loss etc. All I had to do was remove the upper intake manifold and tighten the bolts on the lower intake manifold, but in your case you may want to replace the gasket. After tightening those bolts my engine has not burned a drop of oil or knocked, pinged or what ever.

yes it will fit just fine, but you will need to use the intake off your 93 in order to make the electrical connections mate up.

Please excuse my ignorance. So, will I be able to use the existing water pump, alternator, etc...? Other than the intake is there anything else I should worry about/look for?

I think 95 and up used different computer system and had different heads, which would require some kind computer chip upgrade even if you couldplug it in to the existing wiring harness

the heads are slightly different, but it doesn't make any difference to the computer. It can still use low octane fuel and doesn't require any computer changes. The firing order is still the same as well.

Everything else--water pump, alternator, should bolt up. I am not sure about the exhaust though. After 93 or so, the exhaust system went from a single exhaust gas sensor to a 2 sensor setup, in addition to a camshaft position sensor. I'd imagine if the computer doesnt require it, simply leave it unplugged.

I've not personally done the swap, but a good mechanic friend of mine has and he said its not a problem.
