a friend of mine has a 99 limited explorer and he hit a deer and now its totalled. his rear end is fine and everything and i looked at his axle code and hes got 4.10s and he said that he will just give me his whole rear end since he bought his explorer back for a parts vehicle. can i just take out my rear end and his just bolt right up to everything as it should? im only doing this because it will be a while before i get 4.56s installed and the rear end is free.

There are some differences i beleive but it will go in without too much work. Great upgrade though considering your now getting disks :D I'd deffinily go for it. Are you a 4wd though? If so and your front doesn't match you won't be able to use it until you get them both regeared to 4.56

Should be the same: http://www.explorer4x4.com/discrear.html

yea i know i wont be able to have 4wd for a while and i really like the disk that ill have now. im just ready to get it out of his explorer and into mine.

Like i said...go for it!

I'd just hate to loose my 4x4 haha, may want to remove the front drive shaft just in case (no matter how unlikely) you accentally hit the button. I would...but i'm a very parinoid person haha

Should be a fairly easy swap. If its the disc brakes you want just pull them off and install on yours. I wouldn't like driving with two different sets of gears.

I would definitely recommend getting the 4.10 rear axle... You may find the 4.10 is fine for you needs and not worth getting 4.56s... I've just regeared from 3.27's to 4.10s and the difference is tremendous (running 33x12.5s). I thought long and hard on gettting 4.56's, but everything pointed towards 4.10s.. If my X was not a DD I would have gotten the 4.56s... But the 4.10s are great for my current setup...
