Will you do a stereo "self test" for me?

My '99 Limited has the factory stereo with the subwoofer in the back. It isn't very loud at all. When I do the stereo "self test", it checks each speaker individually, then the subwoofer. When the subwoofer comes on, it's barely loud enough to hear, but the other 4 are fairly loud. Anyone out there with the same "Mach" stereo that will do the test and see if yours does the same? To self test, turn the radio on, press buttons 3 and 6 together for 3 seconds and it starts. To stop the test, turn off the radio. I ned to know if yours plays the subwoofer at low volumes like mine. Thanks!

Although Ford won't tell you how, I also found out how to make the volume increase when I speed up and decrease when I slow down, kinda cool! Still looking for someone to try the speaker test for me... Thanks!

Kidding... with mine, here's what you do. Turn on the radio. Press and hold the volume knob in for about 5 seconds and the words "SPEED VOL" show up along with a number. Mine was originally a "0". I used the selector to change it to a "7", which is the max. Now take a drive and you'll notice the stereo gets louder when you drive faster. It's nothing dramatic, but it's noticable and does make up for road noise. I heard some Porsche's did that and thought "what a great idea!". Hope you have the same stereo and it works, good luck! (and if you DO have the same, how about doing the speaker test?)

I tried the test on my Mountaineer w/MACH and the subwoofer was also barely audible - although it sounds great during normal play. - Thanks for the tip on the volume control

My friend did the speed volume "mod" in his Mustang with the Mach sound system. I just have the Premium sound system in my Ex, not the Mach, think there's a way to get the speed volume on there?

There is a self-test for your stereo but I don't know about the speed volume. I'll check tonite when I get home and let you know tomorrow. Have you tried to hold the volume button in and see what happens?
Do you know if there's a way to increase the volume on the subwoofer only, or is it just tied into the other rear speakers?

The manual I have only covers the '99 Ex and Mountaineer. I'm not sure, but are you saying you have a newer premium system in yours? Anyway, to enter a self test on the premium, it's the same as the audiophile, press the 3 and 6 buttons at the same time. You can also view any diagnostic codes, see the signal strength, test the display, etc. It doesn't really say if either system had the speed volume, I just tried it and found out it works!

Alright everybody, I'm nominating myself for biggest moron in the room. I just got caught up in the idea of "ooh, another cool thing for the Explorer". So, yes, when I got the Ex it had the premium sound. That was, until December when I put in an aftermarket head unit. So the Explorer manual won't help me at all here. My bad. Sorry about making everybody respond to my questions

I just went out and did the self test on my mach system and yes the volume is low on the sub during the test. Thanks for the volume tip.

Sorry to burst all your bubbles about the "speed volume" finding, GM has been doing this for at least 5 years. And they dont hide it from the people who buy their fine products.

Actually that's why I posted it, I wanted to share with others that weren't aware it could do that. (I'm guessing you don't have speed volume and your bubble got popped!)

Well, when I had my 94 X, the stereo was the first thing to go. The new JVC HU I put in, had the speed volume control on it. When I came to my senses in 97, I got a GMC Yukon, and on the factory HU was the "speed volume" control clearly marked. No searching or looking thru the owners manual. So no, my bubble wasn't popped.
