Okay, here it is, has anyone ever attempted to mount a winch under the bed of a Ranger where the spare tire sits? This location makes sense to me but have no idea if mounting upside down matters, any thoughts on this idea?

Do it! I've wanted to put a winch there for a long time. Seems simple enough, just fab a plate between the frame rails. Maybe box the rails.
Do you have the stock bumper still, or something else?

Mounting a winch upside down came up in another thread before, but never got an answer if it would affect the winch or not.

I've still got the stock bumper for now but it won't take long to fab up some stainless tubing for a replacement. As for the winch being upside down, I don't see an issue as they seem to work just fine at odd angles.

Winch mount

I've seen winches mounted under the back on rock crawlers
but not on stock bodied trucks, seams to me the winch would be suspectable to dirt, mud and rocks. Are we talking "TWO" winches on your truck? That's about 100 extra pounds (with the mounting system) on the back.
Where would the cable exit? Would you cut a hole in the bumper? Is there a receiver hitch on the truck?

I have a 88 Ranger extended cab and had custom bumpers made by my local 4X4 shop (2"X4" thick walled box tubing) with receivers in them and I can mount the winch on the rear bumper when needed.
BTW... I saved almost 50 lbs. by s**t canning the jump seats.

OMG stainless steel :D That's going to be ultra bling!! you have to do it!
