Hello All,

My wife and I just purchased an 05 XLT from the dealership and I will be taking it back for them to fix this issue... If I can raise enough hell! Anyways, we started to notice a whining sound coming from the left rear after a while of driving. It seems to be at its loudiest when I give it gas around speeds of 40-60 mph. If i get off the gas, the sound is either not there or i can not hear it. I did some reading about it being a wheel bearing but i dont now what sound a wheel bearing makes when it goes. There is only 40k miles on this Explorer. If i were to describe the sound i would say that it sounds like a whining sound a lot like when I did my first rear end gear swap and had the gears shimmed incorrectly. If anyone has some ideas please let me know, for I have a bad feeling I will have to replace this myself.

Thank you

You might be on the right track with that improper gear mesh. Definitely check for pinion play and backlash.

Ugh !!

Okay, I need to vent... I walk in to the dealer thinking my wife wants a new dodge van..... Nope, last minute she wants this X setting in there... We buy the X and trade in my Dodge ram......... I think i should have kept the ram!!!!

I have been searching this website and I am finding a lot of people have been having this issue and I am not a happy camper... Here is my situation, the dealer gave me a power train war. but where they pay 50percent and i pay the other 50percent.. However, i can buy the bumper to bumper war. when ever i want. Do i report this problem? or go ahead and pay for the bumper to bumper and take it in, in a week???

Also, can someone fill me in on this TSB?? I read it but it made me even more upset, if their is NO warranty on my vehicle will this issue get fixed free of charge or will the dealer charge me??

At worst I am thinking i will be out some money here. Is my math correct?
Rebuilt kit per TSB = $500
Repair time = 6.6 hours at $80 an hour
Oil = $40
So thats 500+528+40 = 1068 diveded in half = $534.. THIS IS MORE THEN I WANT TO SPEND ON NU VEHICLE only 200 miles into it...:thumbdwn:

Is there a downloadable service manual anywhere out there?

You have the common rear end whine. I lived with mine to around 100k then it broke (hole in the case) cost about $1200 to get it "fixed" at the dealer. I have 160+K now and yes I have had the whine for again for about the last 40k or so.

I use alldata for manual.

deffenatly sounds like brg's Check your wheels brgs first Independent rear wheel brgs are actualy pretty exspensive. 150 to 200 bucks , depending where you get them. they are easier to chage then pulling the whole rear end out, to find thats not your problem. unforutunatly what you describe sounds more like a pinion brg. never go to the dealer for parts, they times everything by three, I know I sell parts to them daily. look for a specialty shop that works with differentials , or drive lines. you could get a complete rebiuld kit for no more then 200 bucks. before you mess with all that go back to the dealer and ask for the head sales mgr, tell them you are very disapionted with your purchase, and the next time you decide to buy a vehical it wont be with them.:) it works sometimes, once for me
