The drivers window on my 2002 has stopped working, thankfully it stopped working in the up position

When I put my ear to the door and operate the button I can hear the motor go on and off so I assume it's not the wiring.

I'd like to only have to disassemble the door panel once so what can I expect when I get in there? Is something just off the track that needs to be reset or is there usually a weak link, something broken that will need replacement like a gear on the motor, etc?

I see that Rock Auto lists window motors and window regulators. Should I just bite the bullet and open her up first?

thanks,

Rob

I didn't know you could buy just the motor for the fronts. I thought you had to buy the whole regulator assembly. It sounds like you have something broken in there anyway. There are some plastic bits that can break and fall out. I would open it up and see what the deal is. The door panel is easy to get off anyway. I have seen posts in here (with pics I think) on how to get in there. Open up the passenger side too if you need a 'diagram' of how it works. Good luck.

removing panel to look at window/motor regulator

On my 2002 ford explorer, I recently pulled the door panel off my explorer to deal with a different window problem than yours and it took me just a few minutes (it's still pretty fresh in my head).

There are two hex screws at the bottom of the panel that need to be removed. Then you need to remove one more hex screw to remove the entire panel. To get at it you need to do a couple of things. 1. put a screw driver in the joint between the speaker and a rectangular piece of plastic over the handle. Carefully pry that piece off that piece and set it aside. 2. then work the window/door lock switch assembly off by pulling it toward the front of the car and out. Once you pull out the switch assembly you'll see the last hex screw that needs to be pulled out (I think you unplug the wiring from the switch to make pulling out the panel easier). Once you remove the hex screw, you then grab the arm rest and pull up and out. There is some sticky moisture barrier material that can be pulled away to see what's going on.

Here are some links that I saved that show some general instructions for the rear doors to let you know what you might be getting into. I haven't done this repair myself but it's much more detailed than shown in the instructions. Searching this forum and others can help fill in the pieces if you do your research.

Good luck.
