I have a 99 Exp Sport. The wipers will randomly start moving up and down when the knob is turned off. It happened for a while and then went away, but is back now and usually does it several times each and every time I drive. What can I do to fix?

Thanks!

Replace the stick with the wiper controls on it
(cant think of its name lol)

From TSB 00-09-06
ISSUE:
The front windshield wipers may operate while the multifunction switch is in the OFF position on some vehicles. This may be caused by a resistance drift in the multifunction switch or a partially plugged-in connector.

Action:
If the uncommanded wiper operation condition is present and all wiper related connectors are fully seated, install a revised multifunction switch - YL5Z-13K359-AAA

Multi Function Switch.

A good way to remember: I also call it the Multi F*ckedup Switch since they seem to fail so often and they cause so many different problems. :p: :D

Haha, so ive heard, but honestly my dads old escort, my explorer, my taurus, my dads mustang, on and on older cars that weve owned, theres NEVER been a problem with any of our multif*ckupswitches lol

Ok thanks. Now, where can I find one...and can I replace it myself? I'm not much of a car guy, so I don't want to get myself in too deep!

NAPA sells them. I can't remember exactly how much they are, but I think it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 when I bought mine last year.

Replacing one is really easy. You just have to take out a couple screws that hold the plastic shroud on your steering column and maneuver the shroud over your shifter. Once that is done, I think there are 2 screws holding the switch on and a couple plugs. It's been a while since I've been in there, so there might be something else minor to do. The whole job shouldn't take more than 30 minutes for a first timer.

Thanks so much guys...one last question. My back wiper will not work unless I physically lift it out of the cradle and onto the glass. Then, it works fine. It won't move up from the cradle by itself. Any ideas?

I haven't had that problem, but it sounds like it may be a problem with the motor. If the motor has a burned out coil that corresponds to the park position, then it may not have enough torque to move from that position.

Is the arm getting stuck below the glass? I've had that problem before, but its easily remedied by slightly bending the wiper arm.
