Can anyone tell me the wire colors for a '92 Ford Explorer XLT? Basically, I'm going to bypass the factory pre-amp in the back, and I need to know where wires from the head unit go to which speakers..

I don't think you can do that from the head unit. I had my deck out today and the speaker wires from the deck went into a din cable looking thing. From there it goes to the factory amp. I think if you want to bypass the factory amp, you have to bypass it from the amp, which means taking apart the right rear panel. I think somebody makes a wiring harnes that can bypass the amp.

Godfather's right... If you're putting in a new head unit, and you want to wire your new powered head unit to the speakers instead, the normal procedure is to still connect the unit to the factory wiring, and then go to the back and place the patch of wiring that will allow you to bypass the amplifier. However, I don't see why you couldn't just ignore all the old speaker wiring, except for powering the unit, ignition, etc. and just wire the speakers up yourself instead. Just don't connect the wire that leads to the remote turn on lead of the factory amp. Thinking about it, I don't really know which would require less work, but there's a second choice for you.

Good luck!

Just to give yall a little update, I got it done. Here's how:

I ran RCA cables from my Aiwa CDC-X176M head unit (rear outputs) to my equalizer (Power Acoustik PEQ-007 w/ remote display). From there, I ran the subwoofer RCA cables to my two amps (one runs left, one runs right. Y cable connects the 1 RCA for the amp to the left and right RCA inputs on the amps), then to the subwoofers.

After I checked and made sure the subwoofers worked, I ran the front and rear RCA outputs from the equalizer to a RCA-to-Speaker Level converter 4 channels converter. From there, I tied them into the ford factory pre-amp which runs the ford factory speakers nicely. I have had no reason to upgrade those speakers to anything else. I've tried different brand speakers and just have not enjoyed them as much as the Ford Premiums (i don't know why, but they sound good to me).

I now have the setup that I wanted to achieve. Nice head unit (its no Clarion, but I like the Aiwa unit), nice equalizer with dual controls (subwoofer control is seperate from the speaker controls). I'm thinking about adding some 1" dome tweeters there in front of the windshield (side molding in front of the windshield).

The subs feel up the whole truck giving me the nice bass, and the Ford Premium speakers give me the sound I want.

If you're interested to know where I located everything, here you go:

Ford factory pre-amp is located in its usual spot, the PEQ-007 equalizer main unit is located next to the factory pre-amp, right above the right fender well behind the panel. The display for the equalizer is mounted on a swivel mount, screwed in under the ash tray which makes it flush with the lip under the ash tray but the ash tray is still accessible. The two amps for the subs are located under the back seat (its a nice spot. still allows them to get circulation). That's it! Dead Link Removed

Tell me what you think. Any ideas and comments will be appreciated Dead Link Removed

Sorry for the double post, but I thought someone would be interested:

You can buy a by-pass for the factory amp at best buy for ****$50****. Seems a little steep for me. Instead, just take your rear panel off and do it yourself. You'll thank yourself for not spending the $50 because it's easy.

The wires that go to the top of the amp are the outputs, along with the Power, Remote, and Ground. (Yellow is power and blue is remote). The top three are those wires. The rest of the eight are the speaker wires.

All the wires at the bottom are the inputs. You'll just have to mess around with it and figure out which wires go to what. After you've figured it out, you can then get something so you can splice them together. I would suggest not cutting the harnesses off because you might decide to change your mind and use the pre-amp, or even (dare I say?) sell your Explorer.

Although some off you might not condone doing something like this, I found it very easy to do and a better solution then spending 50 bucks for a little piece of plastic Dead Link Removed

So Im putting in an after market deck in replace of the stock stereo of my '92 Mazda Navajo and the power plug was there with all the ground and memory wires but no speaker wires. What the heck is up with that? Hw do I connect the speakers to my new deck?
