Won't engage high ratio

I have a 1998 v6 model.. everything working fine with no issues until a long 3 mile descent pulling caravan at around 55mph coasting, braked down to 10mph for junction then no drive to pull away. Difficult to engage park but did when engine off. Drives fine in low ratio and when I disconnected the large multi plug at the shift motor it got us home in low ratio with rear drive only. Took the shift motor off and engaged high manually, still wont move in high and makes an occasional clacking noise like something is trying to engage.

You need to rebuild the transfer case, its a very common failure point on the V6 Explorers.
