My 1993 Explorer (Automatic) will not shift when cold.
After placing the gear selector in 2nd I can at least drive
35 mph until the car warms up and then the tranny shifts fine.

Have you checked the fluid level? How cold are we talking about: anytime the truck is "cold" or when it's cold outside?

Thanks Alec.

The trans fluid is full.
It is when the car is cold, the outside temperature doesn't seem to matter.

I would suggest two things

1. Change the fluid and filter, 2. Replace the low/reverse servo O-rings. The procedure can be found on this (about the middle post of page 2) thread is located at:

There should also be a problem with delayed reverse engagement. This is an easy do it yourself procedure that doesn't require removal of the transmission.

this the origonal tranny..... ? this is also a sign they are going to go...

Find a shop with a BG Transmission flush. It replaces ALL 16 quarts of ATF unlike a drain of the pan.

Have them add the BG tranny conditioner.

If that does not help your tranny could be heading south for a permant vacation.
