Alright, yesterday on my way home from work my O/D light started to flash. I have always had a lot of play in the t-case and recently it has been leaking a lot of fluid (been to lazy to do anything about it besides add extra fluid). Would a fault or a problem in the t-case cause the O/D light to flash?

Also what t-case would I most likely have? Its a 1995 (February 95 build date) with 4wd (its the one with the vacuum disconnect for 4 High). Is it the 1354 or 4405? I am looking up prices on them used and the 1354 is a hell of a lot cheaper than the 4405.

Thanks, I am taking it into the dealership tomorrow.... Its kind of ironic because I was thinking on my way to work that my Explorer had 188,000 miles on it and the only thing I have had to do major to it was a tranny rebuilt at 113,000.

No sorry I mean that thread will tell you what transfer case you have.

Ah, so from that thread there is no way I would have a 1354? When I look up t-cases on salvage yard websites if I choose the 4405 I get ones from anywhere between 96-01 which obviously is not correct since the 95 uses the vacuum disconnect. Strange....

If i remember right the Vacuum disconnect is part of the front Axle not the transfer case.
Best thing to do is climb under it and see if you can find a metal tag somewhere on the xfr case and it should give you a part number.

Alright, well I just got a call from the dealership and it looks like it was throwing an O/D clutch failure code.

Now the question is... A) Do I even pay the ~$1,200 to fix it or trade it in on something new that has 0% financing? B) Fix it, then we have option 1) rebuilt current tranny thats already been rebuilt twice or 2) get a used tranny from a junk yard....

What to do, the current tranny was 189,000 miles on it, It was rebuilt at 113,000 and 80,000 all for the same thing, the intermediate band broke.

I don't think the dealer will do it for 1200imo unless they already quoted you. Mine local dealer wanted 800 to tell how much a rebuild would cost but once i nailed the guy down - its 3200 for a reman and thats all they will do.
Local guy in RO did mine for 1600 w a lifetime warranty so. . .

That payment will add up to the rebuild price real quick. Depends on how much you have in now? Do you like it?

If it were me, don't ask as i work in the auto mfg world,
But i have a 12year old 150,000mi jeep that i plan on keeping for a couple of more years, its kinda of a hobby to see how long it I can keep it running and see how long it lasts . . .best part i have about $300 annual payment for parts a lot cheaper than the 500 a month i was looking at

I love my explorer, I have had it for 6 years now and everything besides the tranny has had no issues at all.

The $750 price he quoted me was a "high estimate" of what it would be to put in a used tranny (without the cost of the tranny). He didnt even give me a quote on rebuilding the thing, since its been the same issue every time. But this repair is getting up to the actual price of the vehicle (which is why I hesitate), its been paid off for 3 years now and we have about $2,500 in major maintenance in it already.

I really dont know what to do, but you are right that $1,700 is basically only 7 months worth of car payments at about $242.
