The lifted Explorers are really gettin to me, I love that raised height.

Its got me to thinkin, would I have enough experience to do the install myself (with help of an unknowing friend under my guidance :) ) based on what I've done to my car?

I've done a rear suspension setup, not a lift mind you ;) but it involved installing boxed lower control arms, and relocation brackets. I had the rear end pretty much apart (almost wished I had new shocks to throw on for the hell of it) It was my first time doing this and it wasn't too bad. did it all by myself. i have the tools for everything i would imagine.

But how hard is the install, BTW I wouldn't be going any higher than a 4" lift. Or whatever the best price would be based on not having to replace everything under the truck other than tires and a couple of other things (which i think my only other option would be 5.5?)

but anyways the question is, would I be better gettin a place to do it all....labour charges here are INSANE. I was quoted about 3k for a simple 4 inch lift er so at crappy tire.

anyways your help is appreciated, i'm sure this board is full of DIYers :)

thanks,

leo

From what you say you've done then yes. All the lift kits come with instructions just allow plently of time and take it steady. Choose your kit carefully as some are better than others. (more complete). All the best and lets have some pics!

I've installed 2 6" and 1 2" kit in explorers. I didn't even know if it was safe to disconnect shocks on my truck when we installed the first 6" kit, then I was kicking my own @ss wondering why I hadn't done it myself before. So I'd say yes. I've even written up a good article about a spring over axle conversion that costs 2 perches and 4 u-bolts. If you have any welding knowledge superb, otherwise after the lift is done take it to a shop to install brake hoses and weld up axle perches. I'm scared of screwing up brakes and the kits always miss one or two fittings so I let shops do that but you'll save oodles of $$. Only no basic tool would be a pitman arm puller.
2" skyjacker is a no brainer to install BTW.

Yes, you can dp it!!!!. It not very hard just time consuming. Also have a freind help, as there are times that you will need the extra hands.

The rivets are hard to get out and takes time but again you can do it. I also found that it was alot easier to buy new rear I-spring bolts, $1.50 ea. and cut off the old ones, then try to fight the rusted ones.

Oh yeah, it's realy a great feeling when your done and that truck looks fantastic and you know YOU did it.
:D

thnx for the replies fellas. I was thinkin the same that I should be ok to venture out and do it myself. :)

As for the lift I'll be doing a 4" for sure I think, I'm doing some reading right now in the archives but if anyone can cut to the chase and tell me the best one to do for the buck that'll give me a 4" lift that would be great. again it would be a kit that doesn't involve changing driveshafts and all kinds of extra parts other than the upgrade stuff.

I'm in Canada so if anyone can tell me a killer deal in Canuck prices it would be appreciated. Sure is alot of Skyjacker on this site! :)

I have the Superlift 4" Suspension Lift and found it very easy to install and complete. I have about 8000 miles on the lift with about 1000 miles of that 4 wheeling and not had any problems.

I have also heard very good things about Skyjacker and don't think you would have a problem with that brand either.

You will have to buy extended front brake lines with Superlift as they don't some with the sytem. I,m not sure about Skyjacker. :D
