When I pull my tranny next week, I'm wondering if it would be ok for me to take the top cover off to inspect what's going on in there. Is this a major no no? If it's ok, what should I look out for? What kind of seal is used here (and I suppose I should replace the seal if I open it up, no?).

Thanks.

What top cover are you referring to? The pan, bell housing, and extension housing are the only removable sections on it. The actual case is what everything is connected to. This is between the bell housing, and the extension housing.

Oh, my tranny is the MD05. But thanks for your reply...

I haven't had my cover off in awhile, so I can't give you too many specifics, but there isn't much to see in there besides the shift rails. The cover can be removed and replaced without disturbing any seals or the need for new gaskets.

How doable is it to rebuild an MD05 oneself?

Good question! I don't think anyone here has done it... I have one in my shed that needs a rebuild, but I've had too many things going on to mess with it.

Yeah, a diary with pics would rock!

I don't think I'd go for it blindly. But if I had a spare one and some time, hmmm. ;)
