Ok so i know that i should have posted this in the crack thread but i figured not many people will reread that. So to my question, the idea of placeing a forth generation hatch on to replace the third came up so i looked into it by looking through google. My question is would it work to me it apears as though the fortch gen hatch is much wider than the third meanind it wouldn't be able to close since it wouldn't fit in the bumper

Here's a picture for reference

if that doesn't work just search 2005 2006 explorer in google images and you will find it in there

From what I've seen it's a straight swap mate.

i really like the idea but to me it seems unproprtional and i was also wondering cost of a swap like this and has anyone ever seen or done this

Grab a few measurement's to verify your idea (I'm pretty sure the 3rd and 4th share the same arse). The down side is a new hatch is over a grand but there is always the wrecker's (junkyard) if you can get lucky there.

a 2002 just showed up at the jy but thats the newest and the only person i know who owns a forth gen is the campus police, im not sure if they would be willing to let me measure stuff

I wanted todo a 98 hatch swap to my 95 and couldnt find any good hatch even.

That would be a nice upgrade to a 3rd gen though!

Do they leave their rig open at night? Have you got a set of spanner's? Nah, I'm pretty sure they fit but maybe pm or throw a question in the 4th gen section and ask someone if they wouldn't mind taking some measurement's for you. Or ask the cop's nicely and let them know the hassle you're having. The worst they can say is no.

Im pretty sure the car is here everynight, and all the cops are polite when talked to politely so if i email them they may be willing to help a college student in need :D, but asking the forth gen'ers would be much easier

If they refuse to let you measure it, make sure you have a tape measure in your pocket and do something to get into trouble. When they throw you inside, climb into the back and take your measurments:D

im done with cop cars, and i have four more years here (five year degree) i dont want them to hate me

that sounds like a great idea limited try it college student and let us know how roomy a suv police car is lol

found this in another post

" saw one today!!! asked the guy if he had any problems. he said it bolted up fine but the interior was a lil different. Started talking about a heat gun and molding the inner panel. Also said the rear hatch button would not open the new hatch. then i smelled the beer on his breath and I got away from him. lol so It is possible "

im sure its a different electrical connection of course

well instead of getting in trouble i could just call to get a ride late one weekend (cuz we don't want you scared while walking across campus) and do it then ;)

I haven't looked for myself in person, but from what I've seen it should work. As fedy said, the inside will be off because the interior is different. If the only reason you are wanting to change it out is because there rear plastic is cracked, it'll be much easier and cheaper to get a replacement that's taped on instead of glued. You should have any problems after that.

I am almost positive I saw an 02 the other day with a 4th gen hatch on it. So I think it does work.

Is there a reason you are going this route instead of just replacing the applique? It seem slike a fairly easy job to do. Especially if your applique is already cracked.

I will be doing it myself this spring for preventive measures. Mine isnt cracked yet, but my latch bolts are rusted out so I have to take it off to replace them anyway.
