I need something to hook a towstrap to when i get stuck. After getting pulled out last night by the front axle. I was wondering if i put a shackle through the hole in the rear bumper if that would be reliable?Or would it just rip off the bumper under a lot of force?

Go to your local sports store or auto store and pick up and $10.00 Ten thousand pound tow hook, drill a couple holes on the side of your rear frame and slap it on. Thats what I did and it's held up very well.

just some advice....never get pulled out by your axel again.

you can by em cheap, also if you go to a good local junkyard you can get reall beefy one for cheap.I picked up 4 94 surburban front towhooks for 20 bucks.I plan to put 2 up front and two in the back.

Yeah i was a little nervous about doing it but it was the only way out.
I would get the hooks but dont really want to drill into the frame. But do you think if i had the shackle it would rip off the bumper?

It's a possibility, I got towed out a couple months back by my rear bumper and bent the bumper mounts a little bit nothing a brass sludge hammer couldn't fix but thats why I got the tow hooks is so I had a Solid Recovery point. It wont hurt the frame any if you drill a couple holes in it. or you could always buy a hidden hitch with a u hook adapter on it but thats not very cheap.

If you mount the hook on the frame, put a piece of 1/4" thick steel plate behind the frame and run the bolts through it. This will lessen the chance of the hook tweaking the frame (or worse, pulling through it).

I just bought a 1994 GMC Jimmy so I could fix my friends Jimmy....it came with 2 front frame tow hooks....guess where they are going?

From the factory, GM drilled 2 holes in the frame, and slipped a piece of 3/8 Steel into the frame with 2 tapped holes, and mounted the hooks that way...

So I am going to do the same thing to our Green X. Although so far it is my White one that has needed to be rescued....3 transmissions in 2.5 years
