Looking on Amazon and Ebay the cam hold down tools claim to only fit 1997-2002 engines. I would think the same cam hold down tool would work for the 2005 but maybe I am missing something. They also list the same tool for the 5.4 and 6.8 v10 for those same years. I don't want to buy a set and find out they don't fit my 2005 4.6. Thanks

I really don't know the answer since I haven't had to get into those repairs yet on my vehicle. But I will point out that the 2002 Explorer comes in "Early 2002" models, which I have. There are differences from the early and the later models. They're not major, but maybe that is why the 2002 is included with the 1997 models.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I'd read there was a difference between the early 2002 and the rest of the 4.6 engines which is why I am asking. I can't imagine the dimensions being different however all the ads say 1997-2002. I can't imagine those dimensions being different but what do I know.

I know when I've bought some parts, the catalog asks if it's an early build. Someone more experienced than me should chime in. The only difference I notice is that my oil fill hole is on the drivers side of the engine -- whereas other 4.6L's, such as your vehicle, seem to be on the passenger side. Maybe I'm wrong.

Yes the oil fill is on the passenger side on my truck.

It's probably too late but I got the OTC 6477 and when you open it the instructions actually list from 1993-2022. 4.6l(2v/4v) 5.4l (2/3/4v) 6.8l (2v)V10

@Papa12117 Thanks. I haven't done it yet so this info is useful. My truck has 153,000 on it so I just will be doing it as routine maintenance.

Hopefully I'm doing this right to reply. You're welcome Warnerwh. I tried to post the instructions the other day but I couldn't figure it out I just put an attachment on there with a photo of the instructions that came with it.
