My 4x4 hasn't worked for about 50K miles and I never need it. We have a bit of snow right now, so I tried it today. The light goes on, and there's a ticking sound that follows the speed of the vehicle, almost like the baseball cards you used to put it the forks of a bicycle but must softer. I thought it might work after all the front end work I just had done might of shaken things up a bit. Any ideas what the problem could be before I take it in to be looked at? I may not bother. Also, where exactly is the "shifter" that your supposed to tap with a hammer or something to get it to work again. Coulfd this be my problem? Also, someone told me "the cylinder may be bad". What does this mean? Its a '92 XLT. Thanks.

Trow away dose crappy auto hubs.....

Get rid of the auto hubs and go manual!

Really it is the hubs. Buy new ones from Ford for $320 ea or buy Warn manualls for $170-$190/pair plus the bearing nuts $40/pair and never think back.

The shift motor you are speaking of is underneath the vehicle, attached to the transfre case. However this is not the problem, as your 4x4 lights are working. Its the auto hubs. $160 for Mile Marker manual hubs and conversion kit.
