Last year (2004) I bought my X in the summer and it started stalling out around September until May and it did not stall out once summer came.

Now about the same time as last year it is doing it again.

I have to give it constant gas for about five minutes before it stops wanting to stall out -- could the IAC cause this?

I found this doing the search of the forum:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84220&highlight=clean+iac

however, my IAC is not where that one is located. I looked under the plastic guard and something similar to that but not quite exactly like that one near the back of the engine. Could that be it?

Thanks.

The best way is to show us a pictre. Is your problem on start up or just idle at all times? How many miles? The IAC are pretty common on Explorers.

The IAC on the SOHC is near the middle of the top side of the motor.

Thank you.

Seemingly, the stalling out only happens when it is cold out [55 F and below], but once the engine "warms" up for about five minutes, the stalling goes away.

And the mileage is 118,000.

Thank you, also.

You have to take off the black plastic guard, right? And it is near the back?

The IAC is located on the manifold side of the throttle body - you can recognize it because one end is cylindrical (like a beer can but smaller) and it has one electrical connector with just two wires.

Your symptoms sound like the IAC is a definite possibility. Mine failed the other way - it wouldn't idle properly when it was warm outside - that was because it was sticking closed. Yours might be sticking when the temp is cold.

If you want to see if it is working, you can disconnect the electrical connector and see if it changes the idle. Check out the video in this thread to see what I mean:

The IAC goes Woooo
