My apologies if this has been answered before, I have looked around for about a half an hour and have yet to read anything which covers all the bases of my current issue.

I have a 1993 Ford Explorer (203k miles) and have recently begun to observe some issues. I will go as in depth into the problem as I possibly can. It started with a simple rough idle and has moved far beyond that over the period of several months. Now when I go out to the vehicle and start it cold, in reverse it will "diesel". My engine when I look at it literally dances inside the engine compartment, this includes being able to feel it when inside the vehicle sitting down. Usually after the vehicle has warmed up the problem is less noticeable, the sputter will still happen at about 2400 RPM's but is nowhere near as rough as the idle. One other indicator could be that my engine seems to be running very very hot, there is no sign of a coolant leak but every month or so the coolant will be completely gone from my system. One thing I have noticed is that my temperature gauge does not work correctly, as it rarely gets beyond the Cold area on the gauge. All of this leads me to believe that I have 2 problems, the first causing the second. The first problem is that my engine is running too hot after warmup, possibly caused by incorrect data being sent from the coolant temperature sensor. The second problem (my guess) is that due to my temperature gauge not working and my vehicles computer recieves incorrect information from one of my sensors (hence, the "diesel"'ing. Im completely lost after this point due to the nature of the overall problem. As stated, once the vehicle is warmed up the problems are much less, but they do still exist. Any help you could give me concerning this issue would be wonderful.

*things I have read thus far that could be possible solutions*
-clogged catalytic converter and / or O2 sensors
-clogged fuel filter or lines
-bad IAC or MAF
-required engine tune up (had one done less than 8k miles ago)

Is there anything missing from this?

Is the CEL (Check Engine Light) coming on at all?

Is the CEL (Check Engine Light) coming on at all?

The check engine light has not come on from what I have seen. I did a couple of quick tests to find out but my computer has no stored codes.

Dirty Injectors can cause this issue
Clogged Fuel Filter can cause this issue

The above to at times will go hand in hand.

------------------------------

Dirty or bad MAF can cause this issue
Lower Fuel Rail and Plenum Gasket can cause this isssue

The above usually go hand in hand.

------------------------------

Some more things that cause this issue are:

Bad Plugs or improper plugs can cause this issue

Bad Wires can cause this issue

Bad Coil can cause this issue

Weak Fuel Pump can cause this issue

Low Fuel Pressure can cause this issue

Dirty IAC can cause this issue

Bad Fuel Regulator or low pressure

Clogged Air Filter or dirty filter can cause this issue, which throws the MAF off, which can throw the TPS off.

Bad ECT can cause this issue

Bascially without any codes to start from, its a guessing game now.
I suggest doing the following to try and rule out anything.

- Clean MAF with proper cleaning spray
- Clean IAC with proper cleaning spray
- Check Plugs for Wear/Gap
- Check Wires for Resitance and cracks
- Check Engine Vaccum, check for leaks as well from all vac lines
- Check Fuel Pressure, this can rule out something or help determine if a bad filter is there or fuel pump issue.

As for your coolant gone missing, but no where to be seen?
This can be a BAD head Gasket, but if so you will have Oil In Coolant and Coolant in Oil.

Check those fluids.

Blown head gasket can cause this issue as well.
