    Frustrating: NEW problem

FINALLY got electrical back. Not sure WHICH thing I did was the successful thing. The fusible link on a 92 Ford Explorer is supposed to be in line between battery and alternator, over the top of the engine, so I replaced that cable. I also cleaned all battery cables. I also found a 20 amp fuse...

    Frustrating: NEW problem

My 1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 4wd has been non-stop frustration, and today there is an entirely new problem: NO ELECTRICAL. The battery is new and charged, but there is no electrical whatsoever: no dim lights, no clicking starter, nothing. What might be a logical problem (such as a main...

Starts, then chugs, loses power, Check Engine Light; only 2 cyl firing

THANK YOU, teletekman and FR-425! I thought I'd lost my abilities, so it's good to learn there is nothing there to find. Whew. On the other hand, replacing the cat is MORE money and it's killing me financially. But your suggestions about how to DIY it will help me a lot. (As will simply...

Starts, then chugs, loses power, Check Engine Light; only 2 cyl firing

Can't find the DPFE ("EGR Valve Pressure Sensor"?) Thanks, again. I just now am back in town, desperate to get the Explorer smogged and licensed. The DPFE Sensor is VERY difficult to find and identify on my 1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L. It doesn't exist as shown in your photo, and the online...

Starts, then chugs, loses power, Check Engine Light; only 2 cyl firing

THAT WORKED. Thanks. Replaced the ICM and the engine runs smoothly. (Now trying to get it smogged, they said it surges above and below acceptable NOX, so now I need to track down THAT problem ... vacuum leak or EGR or whatever. Damn.)

Starts, then chugs, loses power, Check Engine Light; only 2 cyl firing

THANKS I can't really make out the pulled codes from the invoice, but maybe they make sense to you: http://postimg.org/image/qvczrk9l5/ I tried to test the ICM, but not sure if I did it correctly. I unplugged the ignition coil and used a test light, neg to battery and probe to the...

Starts, then chugs, loses power, Check Engine Light; only 2 cyl firing

Still trying to get my 1992 Ford Explorer 4.0L 4dr Auto 4WD VIN X to run properly. Here's the current situation: It starts fine, runs about 30 seconds, then chugs, loses power, and Check Engine Light comes on. What we've discovered: It is running on only 2 cylinders now. When I pull...

92 Ford Explorer XLT starts chugging & check eng lite after running good for 15 mins

Thanks. Here's a copy of the invoice, I can't make sense of what's written about the codes. http://postimg.org/image/qvczrk9l5/

92 Ford Explorer XLT starts chugging & check eng lite after running good for 15 mins

1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4wd 4.0L (California vehicle) runs good for about 15 minutes, then suddenly starts 'chugging,' loses power, and check engine light comes on. After sitting overnight, it will again run good for about 15 minutes, then repeats the problem. This problem began AFTER smog...

Found disconnected vacuum tube, where might it go?

My 1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4dr 4wd Auto 4.0 V6 has begun suddenly running rough and the check engine light comes on. It happened after I replaced the O2 sensor, when I was reaching behind the engine to get the O2 sensor wiring, and ended up pulling up that AND a vacuum tube from alongside the...

Oxygen sensor; replaced, now runs rough & "check engine"

Took my 1992 Ford Explorer XLT (4-door, auto 4WD, auto tran, 4.0 V6) for smog test (California) and it failed. It seemed to run fine, and indeed everything passed EXCEPT "NO (PPM)" -- Max 699, measured 2342! So, it's a "GROSS POLLUTER." (I now suspect this was caused by an unoticed missing 8"...

'92 XLT starts and runs great UNTIL YOU RELEASE THE KEY

HERE'S THE SOLUTION: I took it to a highly-recommended electrical mechanic in Fresno. He went through the wiring and discovered that a cheap BUTT CONNECTOR (electrical connector) used when someone installed an after-market alarm system had come apart. $250 to find a 5¢ piece! Disconnected the...

'92 XLT starts and runs great UNTIL YOU RELEASE THE KEY

Yes, replaced the SWITCH as well as the LOCK TUMBLER, and even the FUEL PUMP RELAY. It seems the ECU may be to blame, so am going to switch that as soon as the rebuilt one arrives.

'92 XLT starts and runs great UNTIL YOU RELEASE THE KEY

I've checked cables, no obvious problem. IS IT POSSIBLE THIS PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY THE ECM (ECU)?

'92 XLT starts and runs great UNTIL YOU RELEASE THE KEY

My 1992 Ford Explorer XLT (4.0L V6, automatic, tilt wheel) starts and runs, but when the key is released and springs back to "run" position, the engine dies. While holding the key between "start" and "run", the engine runs but the electrics (blower motor, wipers) don't work. I replaced...
