I had the same problem on my 98 SOHC. It turned out to be the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid that went bad. tpalm had a TSB for this and you might want to look to see if it's for the same years by doing a search for tpalm. The total for me to get it fixed was about $250.00 most of it for labor.

I had a clunking sound coming from what felt like the rear of my 98 Sport. It was the drive shaft slip yoke that needed to be lubricated. 1 hour of labor charged by the Ford dealer - no parts.

Actually it was the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. Sorry about that.
