can anyone find my gears

My 1994 4.0 ltr(manual tranny) and I were driving down the road and all of the sudden all the gears were gone. I had a guy look at it and he manage to get it into low range and that lasted for about 3 miles then it was out again. He said something about a gear shifting motor in the tranfer case but was really unsure. There were no symptons before it happened and, it does not grind or make anynoise when the shift lever is in its respective gear location. Any input would be very appreciated.

For the few miles it did go back into gear it was stcuk in low range

sounds like the transfer case got stuck in a neutral position. What happens when you rev the engine? Any resistance when reving in a gear position? Does the driveshaft spin at all? If the shaft is spinning, but no forward/reverse motion of the vehicle, then check the diff gears.
