Probably any of you who own a 1996 Explorer 4.0 already know this, but I will post anyway. I meant to do long ago, but I did a spark plug exchange today and was reminded. The left (drivers) side is fairly easy to do, just a few scraped knuckles,,,, but the right (passenger) side seems almost impossible. There is a trick to it and is easy.
Just jack the car, take off the wheel (be sure to use stands not leave on jack alone)
Pull off the skirting and "wala" , there are the 3 right side plugs, Makes it a lot easier. Hope this helps
