Ah yeah...fun night....

So we have quite a bit of snow up here and captain idiot in front of me decided to slam on his brakes and skid so instead of nailing his car I swereved and skidded sideways into a curb pretty hard and broke part of my beloved Cobra R.

Anyway, it was a 17x9 Cobra R that I got from one of the guys off the board. I dont think the tire is ruined (which is a 275/55 Scorpion Zero) because it looks like the seal between the rim and the tire broke and just let the air out, but the tire looks fine. I'm hoping I just need a new rim and not both...

My question is about the backspacing. I want to make sure I get an exact replicate of the one I had before with the correct sizings and all so I can put on the old tire. What do I look for regarding backspaing and everything? I have no clue about tires and all that stuff so please help me out if you can. If anyone knows any places that I can get one that looks exactly like this I would really really appreciate it. Thanks alot.

Damn, I gotta see of pic of it broke. A pic of the tire would help to determine if it's bad.

I'm pretty sure that the backspacing is the same on the mustang and explorer on 18" and below wheels.

Look at the back to find the size, 17x9 yes?

Then measure from the mounting pad to both front and rear edges. You should get numbers like 5" and 4.5", etc. The two numbers together will be the width of the rim, plus the edge which isn't counted. Example, I had numbers like 3.75" and 4.75" for my 17x8" Cobra wheels. There is about 1/4" from the edge inward to where the tire rests.

The rear number(minus that extra 1/4") is the backspacing. The difference between the two is the offset. In my example, my wheel had about an inch of offset(Accurately it was 30-32mm).

To find the actual backspacing, you need to know how thick the wheel lip is. Add the two measurements together, subtract the known width of the wheel, and divide that by two. Above, my example was ((BS+FS)-8)/2=.25"

Subtract that thickness from the measured rear distance to the hub, and that should match the manufacturers specs for backspacing. Good luck,

hey man, sorry i havent been on the board ina while and your call got me back. i wouldnt drive with those things in the snow, youre asking for some serious trouble, but thats neither here nor there. get back to me via the forum as to how you make out with downs or EE, ill try to think of some other ideas in the meantime

Yeah...after our first snowfall I knew these wernt the greatest for driving in but my stock tires/rims are in northern PA and I havnt had time to get them....I guess next year i'll put more effort into driving up there and swapping them for the season.

So here's what it looks like now....the tire part still looks intact, I just think the seal between the tire/rim broke and let out all the air. Bah this sucks....I might have to hold off on that SCT chip now :(

Brian, check yer PMs

find out where the person you got the wheels got them from. I know X24 sold his to monmix so both of them might have some insite on where to find them.

Sorry to hear 'bout that, Steve.

Personally, I would get two wheels with the correct spacing and use one of the undamaged one as spare... if your budget allows it, of course.

it would be cheaper the to buy all 4 X. I killed one of my bullets when I had my little incident. Replacement was 250$. I bought 4 new 18x9 white cobra R's on ebay for 275$ + ship. Lots of decisions to make

All of the various 1995 model 17x9 Cobra R's and Cobra R replicas have the same backspacing.... its 5.95". There are some rare ones with a different offset for Mark8's and T-birds, but they are hub-centric and 5 on 4.25 i think.

Basically, get any kind of 1995 style 17x9 Cobra R in 5 on 4.5 lug pattern and your good to go. If the center cap doesnt match exactly, use your old one.
