Problem
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer SOHC. When i first start the car for the day, the engine sputters. The RPMs of the engine continuously goes from below 250 Rpms to 500 Rpms to below 250 Rpms and just keeps doing this. Then every 10 seconds or so, it climbs all the way up to 2000 Rpms and then quickely goes back to what it was doing before. The car drives fine but once in a while if i put too much gas on it while its at a low Rpm (250) it stalls and im forced to restart my car. After 10 minutes of running, the car is miraculously cured and runs at the normal Rpms for the day. However the next morning, its the same story. Ive looked a little at my engine and i have a guess at what it may be but im not sure so if you have any ideas please let me know.

My Idea
I think it might have something to do with the intake manifold mechanism. Connected to the intake manifold is a part that rotates. When the Part is rotated backwards, the effect is the same as if i pushed the gas petal. This part is also where the cruise control is hooked up to. (my cruise control doesnt work either. It shows its turned on but never sets the speed). Then right next to the part connected to the intake manifold (we will call this Part A) is the line from the gas pedal, the throttle. When the gas pedal is pushed at the driver's seat, the line retracts. After looking at Part A more, it looks like the throttle is suppose to be connected but broke off. Part A is suppose to have a piece that comes off and allows for the throttle to attach onto it.

My Question
Id really like to repair this myself but the problem is that i dont know what Part A is called. If i were to order it from rockauto.com, what would i order? Any help with this would be much appreciated and if you want me to send you any pictures, please let me know. Thank you so much in advance for your help!! :)

Sounds like you're talking about the Throttle Body and the associated plate that the throttle cable and cruise control cable attach to.

Your idle issue may be a bad Idle Air control (bypass) valve.

EDIT: You can clean the IAC valve to see if it's a problem. Also, do you ever get a howling from the intake area? If so, that's a dead giveaway to a bad IAC valve

Circled in blue is the throttle body (you're may look smaller as mine is aftermarket & larger)

The green circle is the IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) and may need a good cleaning.

The Red is the plate that the cables attach to.

Is any of this what you're asking about?

[EDIT - JUST NOTICED YOU'RE THE SOHC - MAY BE SIMILAR - NOT SURE THOUGH]
