Hello

I have a 97 Explorer 4X4 and its has 150 000 miles on it, the last owner had changed the transmission fluid at 125 000 so I thought its time to change it again before its too late.

I'm a student right now and I want this car to last me as long as possible, so I want to make sure I do this the right way and I've heard the most important thing in keeping these transmissions going is by changing their fluids on time and by using a good fluid.

Is it a good idea to go to the Ford dealership to change the fluid?
Or should I go to a shop and tell them which fluid to use?
Should I flush the old fluid?

Thanks

Drop the pan, and replace the fluid, and filter yourself. It's not that difficult. Use Mercon V ATF. A torque wrench is recommended. You should check the torque of the valve body bolts while the pan is off.

unfortunately I don't have a garage/parking and its pretty cold outside and a lot of snow on the ground, so I'd rather not do it myself.

I have this chart in # 67 in my list of useful threads. It's based on the A4LD, but you could use it as a reference for your transmission as well.
