I didn't do a search so I have no idea if this has been covered before or not...my bad.

Ok so I was at the junk yard the other day pissing around with a 98 Sport X and 91 X. I compared the 98 MAF housing to a 91 MAF housing and couldn't believe the restriction in the 91. I even test fit it onto the 91 air box and it fit. So I'll be doing a swap and test with it on my Explorer to see if there is any difference.

Here's the comparison pics I took today. I installed it in a matter of minutes.

Ok the thing on the left is the an adapter that bolts on in place of the stock air box to allow a cone filter to be used. It was custom made by hand by flick (a member from Calgary). It's solid billet aluminum, you can find cheap knock off things on e-bay that will do the same thing.
In the middle is the stock 91 MAF housing and on the right is the stock 98 MAF housing.
I couldn't really get any measurements off it to see exactly how much bigger it is, but by holding them side by side you can see the difference.

I have no idea if it's going to make any improvement at all. But I'm planning on upgrading the intake tube soon so if all the parts are very close in size then in my mind it should flow better, which in turn (says the theory) should yield more HP and MPG. Nothing huge but with gas prices going up every little bit helps.

If all I get in the end is a more complete burn and a better breathing engine then I'm happy.

Hello

If these are stock size 55-60 mm then don't bother. It will make no difference. Now can you get a bigger TB for the 4.0l intakes? Will a larger one make any difference? I don't know. Match your MAF size to TB size if you do add anything otherwise I think its a waist of money. Just so you know I have used MAFs from 5.4l OHV and from 5.0l on my 5.0l with no change in performance or MPG.

Are these both from an OHV motor?

No the 91 is a OHV and the 98 was a SOHV. As far as I could tell...the front end was messed up something bad.

Yes you can get a 68mm TB from BBK. That's a $200 + touch. They have been reviewed by other members that seem to think they make a difference.

There is also an after market MAF housing that is larger as well...I think it was met with mixed reviews.

This thing cost me like $5, ya it'll probably due nothing for me but...I got to spend over an hour in the junk plus time pissing around under the hood...all time that was not spent shopping or one of a pile of other things on the "honey do" list. So I see it as $5 well spent

Are you using your "stock" MAF electronics in the different housings?

Hello

What size are your injectors? Are they 19lbs? When getting parts from the junk yard make sure that the car it came off of matches your injectors. You don't want rich/lean happen to your motor. I had that problem with my T-Bird running a 16lbs ecm with 19lbs injectors. It would run rich. The T-Bird did have a ecm that did 19lbs injectors but I put it on the stang. With the stang computer it ran great but when I back to the old ecm it would run rich.

Yes...it swapped right over with no issues. I never really considered using the 98 MAF sensor. Not sure if it would work or not...I do know that the plug has a different shape, but is still a 4 pin.

I didn't really consider that, but I think the injectors are the same size. Perhaps some one that knows for sure can chime in and let us now.

Hello

On the new Maf if used you dont need SIG-RTN or IAT. The older computers don't need them.

Good luck and let us know.

Subscribing. I just picked up the same MAF and sensor from the local bone yard. the sensor came from a 95 4.0 ohc Ranger. Anyone know what size the MAF tube is? 65mm?

Hello

Hey YourNameHere why don't you test with the one from your Cobra. All you would need is the plugin from a junked car and splice it into your Explorer. If you see any gain then buy one if no gain no money lost.

You won't me to try the Cobra MAF and sensor on the Ex?
The Cobra uses 24lb injectors.
I assume 95 Rangers with 4.0 use 19lbs, correct? My 94 Ex uses 19s too, right?

i just grabbed a massive MAF off a 5.0 mercury car. plugs even the same, but im gonna swap out the sensor just in case. this thread made me think to grab it at the junk yard. its easily double the size of my stocker.

I just dremeled down the inner castings so it's nice and smooth, and I knife edged the leading edge that goes top to bottom in front of the sensor (you can see the part I'm talking about in the First pic in the MAF all the way to the right). I'm sure it won't make a difference, but i know it's there.
Now i just need to pick-up a MAF adapter. My local Pep Boys/Auto Zone should sell them, right?

CBII, did you notice any gains? I'll be putting a conical filter on the end of my new MAF

Anyone know if there are any larger OEM Throttle Bodies that will bolt up to the 4.0 OHV engine? I paid $500 for the truck, I don't want to spend $200 on a throttle body! I got the MAF and filter for free.

^^^
Are there any that can be modded to fit?
I have a couple 4.6 Throttle bodies sitting around

I honestly couldn't tell ya. I haven't driving it since I installed it. The wife drives it to work and I drive the BII. Since we've been on opposite shifts I haven't had time to take it out. I'll get to play with it this week though.

I asked the wife and she said she didn't notice anything. I wasn't really expecting anything.

Only time will tell.

Hello

YourNameHere with MAF for 24lbs injectors would not work right. It would cause to much grief. It was just an idea. Good luck testing. Mine will start next summer when my 4.0l gos into the B2.
