Dear All,
Thnx for visiting my Thread. Your comment and ideas are appreciated.
i've a 2009 explorer 4.0 xlt upgraded. I had it almost a year ago. i went off-road tens of times between soft, hard and severe adventures.

A month ago, i have busted my radiator. it was dismounted and i can see leaking at the bottom. I decided to take the following corrective actions:
  1. i bought truxxxxx lift kit (didn't receive since 23 Dec).
  2. building a skid plate (our topic for today).

to start, i tried the available on-line shops but failed to find a products for my X. Secondly, i searched the forum and the internet to find a project but also faild to find any useful thing.

My project contains three stages:
1-possible mounting areas
2-suggested ideas
3-concerns

let us start:
1-possible mounting areas
i looked under the car and found that the possible mounting places are the crossmember or the frame itself see the picture below.

2-suggested ideas
I think that there are two approach, first is muscles i.e. i will bring a 1/2 in steel sheet and have it galvanized. then, the sheet will be cut as shown below. After that, i will bend it and bolt it to the car's frame as shown below the towing hitch will be removed and the plate will have a hole to be used for towing.

top right -> cut sheet
top left -> from the side
bottom left -> bolting from bottom of the frame
bottom right -> bolting from the top of frame

bolting areas:

from the side (good space between the Radiator and the plate):

The second approach is to have a net of beams to be strong and mounted easily but this requires lots of work and will cost hell of money.

3-concerns
The sheet will be bolted to the bottom of the frame very easily (just like the towing hitch). But i don't know how to bolt it in the upper side of the frame.

the crossmember can't be used since it might get shifted up with strong impacts. Moreover, it contains the SRS sensor which i dont want to play with it.

please contribute with me to finish this project any ideas? Comments?

I would make the angle of the front of the skid flatter, so when you run over things it will want to slide up and over the object and not just hit it and dent it in. I would either drill holes into the cross member or put in a front hitch on the truck and mount to that. It would give you a good front recovery point as well.

Here is a skid plate I made for my 2nd gen.

@Stic-o and kert0307 thnx for the prompt reply..

The cross member in my X already has holes to fix the bumper. Is it safe to be used? i am afraid that the AirBag will blow if the plate hit something?

I've been underneath my rig a couple dozen times and I never realized how exposed the lower radiator is. I'm thinking about doing the same now.

I would add a bar/tube in between the frame rails, and bolt the skid plate to that. I just did that on my 2nd gen. I really don't suggest you try to bolt to your stock bumper at all. Angles are important, clearance is important, and strength of your skid is also important. You don't want it doing more harm than good.

@gmanpaint: thnx and i'll take this in consideration.
@ jupiterak: thnx for veiwing the thread I'll update it soon.

Did you ever make skids for your explorer? Update?

s213497 what are the last update for your skid plates?

Dear All,
I had a very difficult time setting up the skip-plate. I have ended up by a U-shaped metal that protects the radiator. Please put your initiatives, prototypes and ideas here to end-up with a good result.
