So next Tuesday I have an appointment to get some exhaust work done. The Monro muffler/brake shop here will be doing the work. I thought about buying a Flowmaster to put in but they have a brand called XLerator and say that it is not as loud as Flowmaster but has better tone.
I'm thinking of running dual pipes and dumping the exhaust after the rear axle because I can't think of a good way to make the tips look prettier than the ugly stock tail pipe.

Has anyone heard of the brand Xlerator? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I haven't heard of that brand. But heres a thought buy a couple of tips and have the shop cut the pipes kinda short so when you put the tip on it looks natural you could have them weld it on im guessing.

Has anyone cut their bumper to make the exhaust tips stick out horizontal (parallel to the ground)? I love the way it looks when bumpers are made to fit the exhaust

Apex performance muffler

Xlerator is one of the performance mufflers manufactured by AP Exhaust Products. They manufacture pipes and mufflers: OE type, performance and even heavy duty tractor/truck/bus

Are you planning to retain your stock spare tire configuration?

Will your fuel line be above the left exhaust pipe?

I plan on retaining my spare tire location but still want to run 2.5" pipe. As for the fuel line, what would you suggest?

This what I have on mine now. http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=BA50150460+01 I have one on each side running duel exhaust. I know it's way more then you prbably want to soend, but the sound and looks are unbelievable.

I love that set up! I was looking to do something like that but I think it's illegal for the exhaust to exit before the rear axle...right? Also, how would I get that to exit with the way the pipe is run between the frame?

Loving the responses guys!

I don't believe that it is illegal for it to exit before the rear axle, i know in new jersey, it has to be at least 14 inches past the rear most opening window. So for an explorer it might be illegal just because of the body configuration but i'm not sure, and i'm pretty sure as long as you're not obnoxious about it you won't have a problem. and what do you mean between the frame? like through the frame? or between the body and frame?

I think here in VA it has to exit behind the rear most door which I think is impossible because the back of the door extends over the back fender. I'd love to set it up that way because of the way it looks on mustangs and trucks but the pipe would have to go under the frame right? My explorer is lowered and I'd be afraid of lack of clearance...

Anyone have any pics of the exhaust exiting out the side before the rear axle?

yeah. give me a little time to set up photobucket and I'll get some pics in the morn. Its basically stock underneath besides being lowered so the fenders are about and inch above the tires. Dual in single out 2.25" stock exhaust right now.

This is how I have mine set-up... what ya think.

In California mine is completely legal. California is more concerned about emissions that have the exhaust is set up.

I love the way it looks. I'll have to check into VA laws and take some measurements to make sure it wouldn't get beat up on speed bumps. What series Flowmaster is that?

Here is mine. No cops have bothered me yet. Its loud with no muffler too.

Here are some pics of the stock set up. Apparently according to the VA law, any modifications of the stock exhaust system is illegal. The exhaust shop I'm taking it to is fine with running it out the side so I guess the easiest way to do that would be to have the muffler moved up about 6-8 inches and then bend both tubes under the frame in the pictures and have them cut flush with the body. Any suggestions?

P.S. ignore the bottle stuck in the rim. It was a windy day and the only way to keep it from blowing away.

Thanks! that will be a very small price for how great I'm hoping it will look/sound
