The following 2 pages are taken from the Ford Workshop Manual, 2004 Explorer. They illustrate the terms Ford recommends in describing and diagnosing axle-generated noises, and how to relate the type noise to the type of failed component. Such standardized language could go far in minimizing the uncertainty seen often in the Forum, regarding noise description.
