Buddy of mine is working on a '91 ranger 4x4 with a 2.9 and the mitsubishi 5spd (Don't know if that's the factory trans, but has been positively ID'd by having a pan on the bottom) When he removed the trans for a slave cyl replacement, it rolled over and these 2 parts fell out. I looked at a couple diagrams, but did not see either part.

Any ideas?

I don't know what those parts are (pretty blurry) but that should be the original factory type transmission for that Ranger. I know the 89 4x4 2.9L Ranger had the Mitsubishi transmission. What part of the transmission did they fall from?

Maybe someone dropped the spring in there and was fishing around with the wire to retrieve it and lost the wire too?????????????

ok, got more info, the parts fell out of the top plate/shifter area, and to put it in scale, that is a 3/8ths extension in the upper corner, the parts are tiny.

I wasn't sure if the mitsubishi was OEM at that point, I thought they switched to the M5OD entirely just before then.

There are springs in that area. Some are use for the detents and others are use to give resistance when the shifter is in the 1-2 gate and the 5-R gate. I don't know what size those springs are but this one does seem a little large for the detent springs. In any case, none of those springs would fall out unless something is broken or the retaining screws are out. That L shaped wire looking thing doesn't look like anything I have seen in a transmission.

ok, thanks, I found this diagram, and like you said, it looks like the only place one finds springs are in the shift rail assembly. (My buddy is stationed at Ft Riley, KS, I am in Anniston, AL, thus the cell pics describing the issue)
