theres a generational change between em, so not too sure. they look to. be similiar, but there may be differences between the two

By eyeball they seem the same size wise.

I would like to swap in a 06 so I can get rid of the cracking Plastic panel and the broken cover over the handle.

It is so funny how car makers want to fix up their cars and just make it worst.

Here is a case in point. These are two years of Ford Explorer clusters. A 03 and a 02.

The top one is what is in my 03 Explorer. The bottom is a 02 Cluster.

Now I drove a 2000 Mercury Grand Marques (a dressed up Crown Vic) for 8 years and my 03 Crown Vic now for two/three years.

BOTH have crappy clusters. I live and drive in Phoenix AZ, in the BRIGHT daylight I wear sunglasses, in the daylight these clusters are nearly impossible to SEE!!

One of the things I LIKED and was impressed by was the 02 Cluster was (Believe it or NOT) Visible even in the bright day light even with sun glasses.

I expected the same in the 03…OMG NO they “FIXED” it up made it pretty with smaller dimmer writing and red pointers…that disappear in the dark shadow and now I cannot see the gauges in the day light with sun glasses on. Fact is RED really drops out in the shadow.

I rather have visible gauges than pretty ones.

So I am ordering a 02 Cluster…I drive 95% of the time in the day light so I need to see my gauges.

I also ordered a cheap 03 Version so I can see if I can put the nice framing face plate on the 02 Cluster...it looks like a drop in over lay part.

Here is my follow up: I got a couple of clusters off eBay cheap, so I was able to combined the faces, I used the better visibility of the 02 Cluster with the nicer framing around the gauges and other indicator lights from a 03 cluster, I did need to open the cut outs for the speedo and tach.

Now I have gauges that are much more visible in the bright daylight with brighted white markings and white pointers and these now are visible even in the dark shadow of the dash.

I DO wish they had managed to use the whiter than white markings of the 02 with the finer detailing of the 03, but when being able to SEE the gauges is more important than how they look especially when you cannot see them.

IT Worked: only two problems, the side door guild pins need to be swapped and I ran into a small problem with wiring things to get locks working.

Like this:

I need a wiring diagram for a 03 and 06 Read Door/hatch. The door locks are not working.

Correction it is 1/2 working it will lock but not unlock.

I have swapped a 03 rear hatch for a 06 hatch. The 03 hatch worked correctly so I am sure this is a minor wiring problem.

Also the rear wiper is also not working, not that this any problem I live in az and have never needed one for 60 years.

Same thing for the rear defroster.

I rigged it up backwards and can unlock the rear hatch by locking the other doors. I then manually lock it last to lock all the doors for the time being.

I also discovered the Great 03 manual hatch lock/unlock lever it not a part of the 06 Door so I plan on rigging one up.

I shall take pictures of this swap and tell all.

I am putting together a how to: coming soon.

Still working on it looking for wiring diagrams.

There was one other thing, there are two guild pins on both sides of the doors, you need to swap them as well.

Seems I remember seeing a thread where someone already did this and discussed the wiring issues and they got it figured out.

Sure could use it...

Thanks

You pointed me in the right direction:

Yes found two great threads:

I was having dumb luck as I seemed to not burned anything out plugging the 06 to my 03..(So Far as I can test...)

And one had a great diagram,

I am attracting three files, one master (too big for a normal 8.5X11 Page and two blown up each good for a 8.5x11 printer page, I just taped them together making one large diagram.

I will try to check out what Everett Bartz Pointed this out: and hope to make any changes as needed.

PS I will now not do the same reports...

Here is the whole search results, FOUND once I figured out the correct wording in search to find them:

I missed all of this with earlier searches seemly because I did not ask the right questions and was flying blind until now.

On my 04 red EB I was able to find an 06 XLT that came in the exact same color. Someone at the junkyard broke the glass for some reason, so i purchased another hatch that had the tan EB interior. The 4th gen EB tan is lighter than the lower trim plastic on the 3rd gen, but matches the upper plastic trim on the 3rd gen

FROM MY own 03 and the 06 door. Note in my cast the plugs mactch 100% in color and fit...wire colors are all over the place:

I will try to double check things as best as I can.

OK Here is some real instructions for the wiring:

First I thought this would be a repining, but them once I looked into it NO it is a cut and splice and soldering job.

Second thing was the wiring diagrams done earlier are a BIT confusing so I worked out the simplest direct way to do this.

Rewire the 06 Door/hatch plugs ONLY.

Here it is:

Interestingly I find the 03 door has NO swappable parts at all.

Is the $20.00 to become an elite...to be allowed offer things??
I figure this rear door is worth say $75.00

But add $20.00 pushes it to $95.00

Rich

PS I am in North Phoenix AZ so shipping such a large idem is also not a good idea.
