1998 Ford Explorer XLT
Hello,

I ran into a problem regarding the key fob programming.
I have a 1998 Explorer Xlt 4wd 4.0L ohv with manual transmission.
I cannot get it into programming mode.
There is no RAP module behind the driver side quarter panel.
It had an aftermarket alarm+fob which I removed because it never worked and was causing issues to the door harness due improper installation by previous owner.
I just repaired the wiring harness going to the driver door.
Everything that can be controlled from door is in working condition.

I did the the cycle as listed in the owners manual as well as on the forum.
I tried the on and off cycle from 5-10 nothing.

I don't know what else to try ,I am open to suggestions and ideas.

Welcome to the forum! What's the weather like in Budapest now? One of the places I'd like to visit!

The RAP module is actually behind the driver's side interior body panel way at the back. Tucked in over the wheel well. You may be able to sneak a phone in to photo the numbers without removing the module. Worked for me on my 98 XLT. I have a key fob also but never programmed it yet.

Thank you for the kind welcome.
I am not actually there but it's quite hot there this week from what my family told me. There are lots of things to see and visit.😊

I see your point, in the wheel well on L/H side just underneath the window there is a black fuse box however tomorrow I will get some pictures posted here for confirmation.

Do you have the keypad on the door? If not, your vehicle may not have come equipped with the RAP Module so there would be no way to program fobs without adding one.

There would be a separate RAP box in that area in addition to the fuse box. If you shine a flashlight in, you should see it without having to take the interior trim panel off. There should be a sticker on it with the Ford part # in addition to the door keypad entry code.

No there isn't a keypad on the door.
I think it's the original door aswell with the factory label.

I took some pictures about the compartment.
I don't think the RAP modul is present.

Yeah I don't think yours came with one. There might be some topic on this forum about adding one, not sure how much trouble that would be if you don't have the harness connector for it, already running back into that rear compartment.

I will look up on the forum how much of a hassle it is.
Also next time when I am back at my home i will go see my friend who has a junkyard and have a look at the explorers there.

I just want to update this topic the info might come in handy one day.
I didn't pursue onward with this since my '98 xlt doesn't have the wiring harness built out for the RAP module. I'm happy to use the key for locking/unlocking it doesn't bother me that it's a missing feature also for me I found it's a lot of hassle to route it up.
