Hey,

Always had a misfire at idle and on startup. Just a tiny one. Like tiny tiny. Have replaced other parts (intake manifold gasket, coil, MAF, bla bla bla.. spark plugs... you know.. everything that would lead to that ((was not trying to fix that in particular btw!)))
It is so minimal it doesn't even trigger a code. 97 XLT V6 SOHC. But it's totally there though lol no denying that and it shows up on live data, just nothing enough to actually trigger a misfire code. It is especially noticeable on first startup especially cold, and after driving idling for a minute or two (like sitting in a parking lot.)
Got it at around 150k now at 220k, always had the small misfire, never got worse never went away though either.
As far as I know stock engine but it's at 220K and no timing chain noise so something tells me someone before me did the guides. (woo) depending on what you consider stock, replacement guides/upgraded guides if those even exist, vs original.

No CEL. Everything is within spec to not trigger check engine.

In everyone else's experience, is this something that may be something to look out for and pay attention to? Does it mean something bigger? Been bugging me for a long time. But it's been such a long time and it hasn't gotten worse, don't really know how to feel about it. I have always changed oil ~3,000 miles (high mileage synthetic w/ additives reputable brands only obviously) just to be on the safe side. Doesn't appear to be sludgy to me. That's really all I got.

Yes, ECU was unplugged recently and checked for debris or bent pins, not a problem there either!

Kind of really want to do a seafoam and flush even though I'm also one of those people that like to leave it all where it is. I just don't like to imagine there's some hidden sludge or buildup in there taking miles off the (admittedly very replaceable...) engine.

I do wonder about:
Injectors
Spark plug wires
... not much else
I do intend to be changing these soon. If you tell me to change these, I will not be mad, because I think I probably would too!

Any suggestions? Any *warnings?* lol Thanks, appreciate everyone and your time

Edit: it's easy to forget: I do not have stock cats, but I do have cats. They're supposed to be "within" whatever amount of filtration/cleanup they're supposed to provide, and they do indeed keep the CEL off. Passed smog test no probs. No, not running lean. That is one thing actually I forgot about. I feel like at this point lots of people have had to replace cats by this point.. But not sure, not enough experience on that end.

Pics are her 1st polish after first bought (for $800 for a reason... lol.. it was filthy like beyond filthy inside..)
and then last week after most recent maintenance detail after replacing all of the suspension components, bigger shackles, torsion adjustment (I really wouldn't call it a lift.. it was sitting lower than supposed stock height lol.) and 31"s. Among much TLC and restoration!

Pretty truck!

I personally do wires with plugs and I think most guys do here. Motorcraft ones seem to be the preferred wires and plugs.

Good idea running the seafoam.

When you changed the old plugs, did they tell you any stories, or did they all look the same?

Oh yeah, one told me a story. It said F$#K, because whoever sent it in (one of the rear ones) used an air tool and cracked the hell out of it. :) To be fair the misfire wasn't too wild then either though, it was cracked but definitely still firing somehow.
But overall they looked normal, no obvious wetness, pretty regular carbon. (New plugs didn't make it run noticeably better or improve MPG surprisingly enough.)
Gonna get new wires and start by cleaning my injectors first, then new ones if it isn't an obvious improvement! Thanks [:

@metalxface That's exactly the two next things I'd have suggested. Yes, I strongly recommend changing wires and plugs together; both of my Explorers (one bought at 160k-ish and the other bought at 215k-ish) ate a coil pack and got new plugs and wires within 3 months of purchase.

You're a smart fella, you've already thought of the right places to look.

That's one sharp-looking Ex. Keep that SOHC rippin', they're happy little engines if you keep the oil changed.

Boy the fun things I can do with that truck
Very nice
Just change your oils ;)

Always change them nice and EARLY ;) and always go for the ones that have *recently* been studied to have top performance.
Thank you!!

Thanks again! Yeah, I got it for $800... Yeah. For a reason lol. It needed a battery and a severe clean and detail. You name it and it was wrong. Within a few months idler pulley took a ****, alternator died probably from the bad battery the guy was running in it, changed belts, all front suspension got redone by me and upgraded to polyurethane so I could run oil undercoatings without fear of cracked rubber.. At one point it developed this nasty misfire and I chased it down, it wound up being a crack on the rear of the coil. You couldnt see it and it would be really bad any time it rained or the weather changed drastically. No wonder right lol. Changed the coil and it has been normal ever since (of course, with the tiny negligable misfire.) It had no cats, got new ones welded on. It sounded really nice with the straight pipe I won't lie LOL.
Bearings/hubs.. Tires.. Lift shackles.. Gear oil and new gaskets. Went over the entire frame and sanded the rust off, coated with primer and black then lanolin undercoating. Wired in a new fog light (the old one was simply not there.) Removed, polished from inside and out, and re-sealed the headlight lenses because they were nasty yellow with lichens and algae growing inside. Redid the vinyl stripe to match the original one so that's also new and crisp. Sanded and repainted rusted parts of roof... Repainted the rear glass wiper arm, and front wiper arms. Cleaned and polished all the rubber seals inside and out just to make them not look chalky and faded. Bed liner on all the plastic trim.. Blocked and polished the liftgate... (looks incredible lol) Redid the paint on the door trim and rear where the glass is. Replaced struts for the rear glass, hood. LED replacement on all the interior bulbs and headlights just to minimize strain on the electrical system.

I even polished the *mirrors* hahaha.. Every single surface I tried to breathe life back into. It was just so likeable and I still enjoy it every time I go anywhere in it. People lately have been giving all the compliments since we moved to a suburban-near-the-city area. Including a guy in a little sedan saying to my girlfriend "you are SO cool for driving that badass thing around here" Hahaha like what!? Felt great though and no he wasn't being sarcastic. Smiles per gallon just taking a trip to home depot, right? Gotta love that.

Totally a tangent but I personally love stories like that.
For real, every single thing that could've been left to neglect on it was and now it's totally acceptable LOL and so fun to take out.
Oh! And just picked up a Lund moon visor for it..... Gotta color match it to the dark lapis metallic but I can't wait. It's going to be perfect lol. Next is a 3" body lift and 33s. Could totally fit them right now but I like the look of a little bit of clear gap above the tires so you can see the inner wheel wells. Haven't done any lighting other than the restored Hella lights on the roof (there's a few more waiting to go on. And I restored a Carr light bar that hasn't gone on since I wanna put the visor on first before I discover I made them interfere with one another's placement..) but I really do like the idea of some nice plain clean lighting in the wheel wells if I can find a decent replacement for the covers that go in there via the push clips.

Sorry for double post, when I tried to edit previous message it had an error.

Sounds like my 99. Wanted a 5.0 in the worst way, got this girl for $600. Beat to absolute hell. Had to replace damn near everything functional but the motor and trans, probably put $3k in parts into an Ex with a shot paint job that looks like hell. Oh well, she’s reliable now and runs like a top.

Bedliner or Maaco and just have them lay it on thick so you can block it and polish it later ;)
Personally picked this up cuz I needed a truck to get my mom to the dr (crippled + 70 yrs old) with that she could get in and out of easily.. Of course that was the case when it was stock height lol. Didn't mean for it to be a daily driver and it has been for the past 2 and a half years now. Something is always slowly going wrong, but nothing just totally takes a dump like you see on economy cars or newer trucks. They really are tough and wear out slow and predictably, there aren't, at least with the majority of configurations, these massive surprises (I'm looking at you 3rd gen 03??? explorers with the transmission issues.. lol)
Nothing is more satisfying than the pure reliability, that's really true!! As far as paint on mine turns out one of the previous owners had it detailed regularly. I'm sure all the treatment and care must have helped preserve the paint. Roof is still peeling but the visor I got is gonna cover the real nasty parts and the basket will cover the rest. So meh :P

That’s so true. I’ve never had to have either of my explorers towed, across 16 years and nearly 300,000mi. They always either give you enough warning to get home, or they’ll keep it together until the driveway.

@metalxface Whoa there son, you've had a busy week I see. Good to get all the issues sorted out! Nice work!

It's a labor of love and denial. I love to polish turds. "If I can just keep putting time and energy into it it won't screw me."

Because even if it may or may not be a turd depending on who you ask, they don't make turds like they used to ;)
Thanks! lol I appreciate it. I saw your thread with your superlift and am quite envious that you got one installed. That's next after I do the BL!

@metalxface Superlifts are getting hard to find. I might actually recommend the Rough Country for the one-piece crossmember and the ability to adjust higher than the Superlift, negating the need for a body lift (I dislike body lifts). Either way, there is no right way to bring the rear end up level with the front. It will require custom work.

Some say that the coincidental F150's leaf springs fit the Explorer, but I can't verify this. I do know there exist lifted springs for those, but you might run into brake line and drive shaft issues. And if you do go Superlift, make sure you get a Superlift or Rough Country drive shaft, because those angles will shred a stock CV drive shaft.

I can definitely speak for the quality of the Superlift, although the sway bar end links have been bent up pretty nicely from all my thrashing around.
