    Removing EGR valve

This I don't understand. The 99 should have three double O-ring gaskets to fit the upper plenum to the lower manifold, not a single paper gasket. Earlier models of the OHV did use a single paper gasket. If an earlier gasket is used, it will result in a vacuum leak because of the different shaped...

Flywheel to block spacing - replacement engine trouble!

That's an EVAP hose that runs to a valve under the battery. You can replace it with a length of generic emissions hose or 3/8" fuel line. Good luck on it being the starter.....

    Removing EGR valve

It's hard to loosen that nut without damaging/twisting the tube itself. There's a product called "Freeze-off" that you might try in addition to applying heat with a propane torch. Dorman now sells replacement tubes if you find you need one. Good luck.

Solved Help needed for identifying a vacuum hose on the throtte body.

JC was close. It's an EVAP hose that goes to a valve underneath the battery area. It's about 2 feet long and easily deteriorates from underhood heat. You can replace it with emissions hose, or do like I did and use 3/8" fuel line hose. When handled, the old hose will turn your hands very black...

OMG I just bought a car and it's not an Explorer!

The 3.0 is bulletproof. The only common failure point that I know of is the cam synchronizer. And it's super easy to change on that engine. Good score.

    Rear diff fluid capacity accurate?

I changed my rear diff recently, and it took 2.5 quarts to refill. I didn't do anything special to drain the axle tubes, just let it drip out the diff until it stopped. As long as the vehicle wasn't tilted toward the right, I don't see how you could overfill it. You're right, it's a "fill and...

    SHOCKS

Speaking of shocks, I replaced my worn-out Rancho 5000s with a pair of Bilsteins today. The Ranchos had over 100K miles on them so it was time. I also replaced the sway bar end links with a set of Energy Suspension with poly bushings. The rears are coil over Monroes with an EE anti-sway bar with...

4.0 OHV Timing Cover & Gasket Issues

FlipPhone, torque spec for the cam sprocket bolt is 44 to 50 ft lbs., and the timing chain guide and tensioner bolts torque at 84-108 INCH-lbs and 84-96 INCH-lbs respectively. Timing chain cover bolts are 13-15 ft-lbs. Crank pulley bolt is 30-37 ft-lbs and then an additional 90 degrees. Since...

    Wider wheels in back

If my figuring is correct, the 10.5" wheels will have about 6.75 backspacing. That is over 2" more than the stock wheels, and in looking at my 2000 Sport, it appears that the tire sidewall will rub on the inner fenderwell. The wheel openings do look large, but they're not that deep. You might...

4.0 OHV Timing Cover & Gasket Issues

Welcome FlipPhoneHoldOut. I too changed out the timing chain and gears. It quietened the engine considerably. My chain had worn into the plastic guide and did have a bit of slack in it, enough to cause a slight rattle sometimes. I noticed the new chain guide had a weaker spring, probably to...

    Ranger 8.8.

I just did an oil change on my Explorer 8.8, and the refill was about 2 1/4 quarts, so you still had some oil in it. You're probably OK. As 410Fortune mentioned, Ford specs the 75W-140 synthetic for the 2000 models.

    Front brake hype or fact?

Good info from Bronchole and Masospaghetti. My (cough) Jeep Cherokee had problems with seized calipers, so I installed a set of drilled/slotted rotors hoping they would run cooler. Afterwards the brakes felt lots better and seemed to stop with less pedal pressure than before. No hard evidence...

    Secondary Transmission Filter Installed (Feedback)

Thanks for confirming the ATF flow direction. The old leaky plastic Magnefines are gone now, replaced with the metal cased ones. They look to be high quality and are made in USA. www.magnefine.com I was wrong about the adapter fittings being Derale brand. They're actually a Hayden "Service Kit...

    Secondary Transmission Filter Installed (Feedback)

This thread is an oldie but a goodie. Wonder if Hank (thread starter) is still around? Magnefine now manufactures their filter with a steel case, so I picked one up and installed it in 'Mr Blue', a 2000 Sport with about 167K miles on it now. I ordered a Derale fitting kit which allowed me to...

    2020 Ford Bronco!!

Ford is bringing out a completely redesigned Escape for 2020, and I read that the "Baby" Bronco would be based on it...? Also that the Baby would come out first, and precede the Ranger based Bronco by about 2 months. Don't know how accurate this is. I wish Ford would give more info on these...

CEL comes on for a few weeks then goes off

Sounds like the previous owner marked the wires as to their coil pack positions, which are 5,6, and 4 (driver's side of coil, front to back). If the wires were wrong, you'd have a dead miss and not intermittent. You could have a weak plug or high resistant wire on number 4 cylinder. Easy to...

    Parking Brake Adjustment

CEL comes on for a few weeks then goes off

The SOHC engine will have those letters stamped on the top engine cover. The OHV will have a smaller triangular shaped cover. The most common cause of lean codes in these engines are vacuum leaks, usually from deteriorated plenum O-ring gaskets. Since you're only showing a bank 1 lean code, I'm...

    Parking Brake Adjustment

I believe the adjuster is indeed on backwards, if I'm orienting that pic correctly. (I did this job recently) and the driver's side star wheel was to the front of the access hole. The passenger side star was to the rear of the access hole. As Don said, that adjuster is backed all the way in and...

2000 Ford Explorer Sport stumped on electrical problem

It sounds like a bad battery cable or loose connection. Since you've already installed a new battery, check the positive cable connection to the starter and the negative cable connection to the bolt at the starter base. I'll bet one or the other will be corroded or loose. One of the cables...

Upper control arm replacement part 2001 Explorer Sport

Go ahead and install them, since the price is right. The 2-piece allows for caster adjustment in the event the vehicle pulls to the left or right. You can always install the 2-piece later if needed, but it's unlikely.

    After Market Wheel Size Question

I think they'll fit OK. I had 255x75s on a set of Cragar 7" with +6mm offset. The closest interference will be the outer tie-rod end. I only had about 1/4" clearance with mine, but nothing rubbed. Just my best guess, and no guarantees, but they should work. (The bigger tires will slow you down a...

    "Clamshell" Ford Bronco?

Yeah, 2 doors are going the way of the Dinosaurs seems like. Too bad. I could live with clamshells though; my SIL has an Element with them and they are convenient. In some ways better than true 4-doors. The clip I saw didn't show the driver's side. Possibly the clamshell is only on the...

    "Clamshell" Ford Bronco?

The MotorWeek Bronco video spy clip shows what might be a clamshell door setup similar to the Honda Element and the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The Bronco was camouflaged so it was hard to tell for sure, but there was a definite vertical line behind the front door opening. Or maybe Ford is tricking us...

    2020 Ford Bronco!!

MotorWeek had a 10 second clip of the Bronco yesterday. It was camouflaged and therefore hard to make out specifics, but it looked to definitely be a 2 door or possibly a clamshell (Honda Element type). If it's indeed a clamshell, that would make rear entry easier and still give the appearance...

    setting No1 cylinder to TDC

You can remove the cam sensor, and observe if the 'flag' on the syncro shaft is at or near the window in the housing itself. If so, it's on the compression stroke. If the flag is 180* opposite to the window, the crank needs to be turned one revolution to get on the compression stroke. (This...

    Disabling Auto-lock / unlock

Sorry it didn't work on a 95. I took the procedure out of my 2000 Owner's Guide. I neglected to mention that all doors and the liftgate/window must be closed. If you have keyless entry, try this: Enter the 5 digit entry code. Press and release the 3/4 control while holding the 7/8 control...

Swapping auto trans valve body 4.0 2001

I used an upside down cardboard box with holes punched in the appropriate places to keep track of my VB bolts. I've considered a 302 swap in the past, but never got up enough free time or inclination to do it. Love to have one though. How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

My 2000 Sport (Mr Blue), has about 167 K on it now. I recently had to replace the cam synchronizer after it became noisy. Previous oil changes were with Castrol 10W-30 conventional oil. I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic now, and hoping that will cure the syncro from wearing out prematurely...

    Radiator lower shield(?)
